Driving topological phases by spatially inhomogeneous pairing centers

2017

We investigate the effect of periodic and disordered distributions of pairing centers in a one-dimensional itinerant system to obtain the microscopic conditions required to achieve an end Majorana mode and the topological phase diagram. Remarkably, the topological invariant can be generally expressed in terms of the physical parameters for any pairing center configuration. Such a fundamental relation allows us to unveil hidden local symmetries and to identify trajectories in the parameter space that preserve the non-trivial topological character of the ground state. We identify the phase diagram with topologically non-trivial domains where Majorana modes are completely unaffected by the spa…

Magnetic properties of a strongly correlated system on the Bethe lattice

2010

We study the influence of an external magnetic field h on the phase diagram of a system of Fermi particles living on the sites of a Bethe lattice with coordination number z and interacting through on-site U and nearest-neighbor V interactions. This is a physical realization of the extended Hubbard model in the narrow-band limit. Our results establish that the magnetic field may dramatically affect the critical temperature below which a long-range charge ordered phase is observed, as well as the behavior of physical quantities, inducing, for instance, magnetization plateaus in the magnetization curves. Relevant thermodynamic quantities - such as the specific heat and the susceptibility - are…

XXZ-like phase in the F-AF anisotropic Heisenberg chain

2008

By means of the Density Matrix Renormalization Group technique, we have studied the region where $XXZ$-like behavior is most likely to emerge within the phase diagram of the F-AF anisotropic extended ($J-J'$) Heisenberg chain. We have analyzed, in great detail, the equal-time two-spin correlation functions, both in- and out-of- plane, as functions of the distance (and momentum). Then, we have extracted, through an accurate fitting procedure, the exponents of the asymptotic power-law decay of the spatial correlations. We have used the exact solution of $XXZ$ model ($J'=0$) to benchmark our results, which clearly show the expected agreement. A critical value of $J'$ has been found where the r…

Exact solution of the 1D Hubbard model with NN and NNN interactions in the narrow-band limit

2013

We present the exact solution, obtained by means of the Transfer Matrix (TM) method, of the 1D Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) Coulomb interactions in the atomic limit (t=0). The competition among the interactions ($U$, $V_1$, and $V_2$) generates a plethora of T=0 phases in the whole range of fillings. $U$, $V_1$, and $V_2$ are the intensities of the local, NN and NNN interactions, respectively. We report the T=0 phase diagram, in which the phases are classified according to the behavior of the principal correlation functions, and reconstruct a representative electronic configuration for each phase. In order to do that, we make an analytic limit $T\…

Exact solution of the 1D Hubbard model in the atomic limit with inter-site magnetic coupling

2012

In this paper we present for the first time the exact solution in the narrow-band limit of the 1D extended Hubbard model with nearest-neighbour spin-spin interactions described by an exchange constant J. An external magnetic field h is also taken into account. This result has been obtained in the framework of the Green's functions formalism, using the Composite Operator Method. By means of this theoretical background, we have studied some relevant features such as double occupancy, magnetization, spin-spin and charge-charge correlation functions and derived a phase diagram for both ferro (J>0) and anti-ferro (J<0) coupling in the limit of zero temperature. We also report a study on de…

Critical behaviour in one dimension: unconventional pairing, phase separation, BEC-BCS crossover and magnetic Lifshitz transition

2017

We study the superconducting properties of population-imbalanced ultracold Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices that can be effectively described by the spin-imbalanced attractive Hubbard model (AHM) in the presence of a Zeeman magnetic field. We use the mean-field theory approach to obtain the ground state phase diagrams including some unconventional superconducting phases such as the Fulde--Ferrell--Larkin--Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, and the $\eta$ phase (an extremal case of the FFLO phase), both for the case of a fixed chemical potential and for a fixed number of particles. It allows to determine optimal regimes for the FFLO phase as well as $\eta$-pairing stability. We…

FFLO state in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional optical lattices combined with a non-uniform background potential

2008

We study the phase diagram of an imbalanced two-component Fermi gas in optical lattices of 1-3 dimensions, considering the possibilities of the FFLO, Sarma/breached pair, BCS and normal states as well as phase separation, at finite and zero temperatures. In particular, phase diagrams with respect to average chemical potential and the chemical potential difference of the two components are considered, because this gives the essential information about the shell structures of phases that will occur in presence of an additional (harmonic) confinement. These phase diagrams in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions show in a striking way the effect of Van Hove singularities on the FFLO state. Although we focus o…

Pressure-Induced Collapse of the Charge Density Wave and Higgs Mode Visibility in 2H−TaS2

2019

The pressure evolution of the Raman active electronic excitations of the transition metal dichalcogenides $2H\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{TaS}}_{2}$ is followed through the pressure phase diagram embedding incommensurate charge-density-wave and superconducting states. At high pressure, the charge-density wave is found to collapse at 8.5 GPa. In the coexisting charge-density-wave and superconducting orders, we unravel a strong in-gap superconducting mode, attributed to a Higgs mode, coexisting with the expected incoherent Cooper-pair breaking signature. The latter remains in the pure superconducting state reached above 8.5 GPa. Our report constitutes a new observation of such Raman active H…

Emery vs. Hubbard model for cuprate superconductors: A composite operator method study

2013

Within the Composite Operator Method (COM), we report the solution of the Emery model (also known as p-d or three band model), which is relevant for the cuprate high-Tc superconduc- tors. We also discuss the relevance of the often-neglected direct oxygen-oxygen hopping for a more accurate, sometimes unique, description of this class of materials. The benchmark of the solution is performed by comparing our results with the available quantum Monte Carlo ones. Both single- particle and thermodynamic properties of the model are studied in detail. Our solution features a metal-insulator transition at half filling. The resulting metal-insulator phase diagram agrees qual- itatively very well with …

Phase diagram of dirty two-band superconductors and observability of impurity-induced $s+is$ state

2016

We investigate the phase diagram of dirty two-band superconductors. This paper primarily focuses on the properties and observability of the time-reversal symmetry-breaking $s+is$ superconducting states, which can be generated in two-band superconductors by interband impurity scattering. We show that such states can appear in two distinct ways. First, according to a previously discussed scenario, the $s+is$ state can form as an intermediate phase at the impurity-driven crossover between $s_{\pm}$ and $s_{++}$ states. We show that there is a second scenario where domains of the $s+is$ state exists in the form of an isolated dome inside the $s_{\pm}$ domain, completely detached from the transi…
