Brownian motion in trapping enclosures: Steep potential wells, bistable wells and false bistability of induced Feynman-Kac (well) potentials

We investigate signatures of convergence for a sequence of diffusion processes on a line, in conservative force fields stemming from superharmonic potentials $U(x)\sim x^m$, $m=2n \geq 2$. This is paralleled by a transformation of each $m$-th diffusion generator $L = D\Delta + b(x)\nabla $, and likewise the related Fokker-Planck operator $L^*= D\Delta - \nabla [b(x)\, \cdot]$, into the affiliated Schr\"{o}dinger one $\hat{H}= - D\Delta + {\cal{V}}(x)$. Cutting rules and positivity in finite temperature many-body theory

Abstract For a given diagrammatic approximation in many-body perturbation theory it is not guaranteed that positive observables, such as the density or the spectral function, retain their positivity. For zero-temperature systems we developed a method [2014 Phys. Rev. Ordering and demixing transitions in multicomponent Widom-Rowlinson models.

We use Monte Carlo techniques and analytical methods to study the phase diagram of multicomponent Widom-Rowlinson models on a square lattice: there are M species all with the same fugacity z and a nearest neighbor hard core exclusion between unlike particles. Simulations show that for M between two and six there is a direct transition from the gas phase at z < z_d (M) to a demixed phase consisting mostly of one species at z > z_d (M) while for M \geq 7 there is an intermediate ``crystal phase'' for z lying between z_c(M) and z_d(M). Gaia DR2 reveals a star formation burst in the disc 2-3 Gyr ago

We use Gaia DR2 magnitudes, colours and parallaxes for stars with G<12 to explore a 15-dimensional space that includes simultaneously the initial mass function (IMF) and a non-parametric star formation history (SFH) for the Galactic disc. This inference is performed by combining the Besancon Galaxy Model fast approximate simulations (BGM FASt) and an approximate Bayesian computation algorithm. We find in Gaia DR2 data an imprint of a star formation burst 2-3 Gyr ago, in the Galactic thin disc domain, and a present star formation rate (SFR) of about 1 Msun. Our results show a decreasing trend of the SFR from 9-10 Gyr to 6-7 Gyr ago. This is consistent with the cosmological star formation …

On the phase diagram of[N(CH3)4]2ZnCl4under uniaxial stress

Abstract Optical measurement and microscopic observations have been performed of single crystals of (TMA)2ZnCl4 with the aim to establish its phase diagram in the coordinates temperature-uniaxial stress σ. Stress-induced shifts of transition temperatures have been evaluated. For stresses exceeding 4.5 MPa two new monoclinic phases are reported, tentatively labeled as VIII and IX, both with the monoclinic axis b.

Electron-hole bilayer quantum dots: Phase diagram and exciton localization

We studied a vertical ``quantum dot molecule'', where one of the dots is occupied with electrons and the other with holes. We find that different phases occur in the ground state, depending on the carrier density and the interdot distance. When the system is dominated by shell structure, orbital degeneracies can be removed either by Hund's rule, or by Jahn-Teller deformation. Both mechanisms can lead to a maximum of the addition energy at mid-shell. At low densities and large interdot distances, bound electron-hole pairs are formed.

Sudoku – A Language Description Case Study

A complete language description includes the structure as well as constraints, textual representation, graphical representation, and behaviour (transformation and execution). As a case study in language description, we consider Sudoku as a language, where a Sudoku puzzle is an instance of the language. Thus we are able to apply meta-model-based technologies for the creation of a language description for Sudoku, including correctness checking of a puzzle, and solving strategies. We identify what has to be expressed and how this can be done with the technology available today.

Scanning tunnelling spectroscopy study of paramagnetic superconducting β''-ET(4)[(H(3)O)Fe(C(2)O(4))(3)]·C(6)H(5)Br crystals.

Scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) and microscopy (STM) were performed on the paramagnetic molecular superconductor β''-ET(4)[(H(3)O)Fe(C(2)O(4))(3)]·C(6)H(5)Br. Under ambient pressure, this compound is located near the boundary separating superconducting and insulating phases of the phase diagram. In spite of a strongly reduced critical temperature T(c) (T(c) = 4.0 K at the onset, zero resistance at T(c) = 0.5 K), the low temperature STS spectra taken in the superconducting regions show strong similarities with the higher T(c) ET κ-derivatives series. From microscopic to macroscopic description of Josephson dynamics in one-dimensional arrays of weakly-coupled superconducting islands

Abstract By starting from a microscopic quantum mechanical description of Josephson dynamics of a one-dimensional array of N coupled superconductors, we obtain a set of linear differential equations for the system order parameter and for additional macroscopic physical quantities. With opportune considerations, we adapt this description to two coupled superconductors, obtaining the celebrated Feynman model for Josephson junctions. These results confirm the correspondence between the microscopic picture and the semi-classical Ohta’s model adopted in describing the superconducting phase dynamics in multi-barrier Josephson junctions.

Robust semi-Dirac points and unconventional topological phase transitions in doped superconducting Sr2IrO4 tunnel coupled to t2g electron systems

Semi-Dirac fermions are known to exist at the critical points of topological phase transitions requiring fine-tuning of the parameters. We show that robust semi-Dirac points can appear in a heterostructure consisting of superconducting Sr2IrO4 and a t2g electron system (t2g-ES) without fine-tuning. They are topologically stable in the presence of the symmetries of the model, metallic t2g-ES and a single active band in Sr2IrO4. If the t2g metal is coupled to two different layers of Sr2IrO4 (effectively a multiband superconductor) in a three-layer-structure the semi-Dirac points can split into two stable Dirac points with opposite chiralities.
