Cystatin C levels are decreased in acute myocardial infarction: Effect of cystatin C G73A gene polymorphism on plasma levels

Background: Cystatin C is the most abundant protease inhibitor in the plasma. Low plasma levels have been found in patients with aortic aneurysms and they seem correlated with the extension of the aortic lesions in early aneurysms detected by ultrasonography. Methods: In this study, plasma levels of cystatin C have been investigated in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), unstable angina and controls. The effect on plasma levels of the G73A polymorphism of the CST3 gene has been also evaluated. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is a new immunosuppressive drug used to reduce acute rejection after heart transplantation. As with other immunosuppressive drugs, MMF therapy is associated with several adverse effects. However, the direct effects of MMF on myocardial tissue has not been yet evaluated. Given the association of disturbances in non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) metabolism with the development of Type 2 Diabetes and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, computational models of glucose-insulin dynamics have been extended to account for the interplay with NEFA. In this study, we use arteriovenous measurement across the subcutaneous adipose tissue during a mixed meal challenge test to evaluate the performance and underlying assumptions of three existing models of adipose tissue metabolism and construct a new, refined model of adipose tissue metabolism. Factor V Leiden mutation has emerged as one of the leading abnormalities in inherited blood coagulation disorders, resulting in a markedly increased risk for deep leg vein thrombosis. A 24- year-old woman presented with acute onset of critical ischemia of her left thumb and index finger. Intraarterial angiography revealed an embolus in the distal radial artery and a thrombotic occlusion of the digital artery of the thumb and index finger. Immediate therapy encompassed a selective surgical embolectomy of the distal radial artery followed by a local intraarterial lysis that was continued for 3 days.
