What time is it? Prefaced by this question, this paper investigates a number of ways to express the time in Catalan from a dialectal and pragmatic perspectiva. In this article, all dialectal varieties of the two main ways to tell the time (one based on the next hour, i.e. “one quarter of nine”, and the other based on the current hour, i.e. “eight and a quarter”) from the data from 190 locations surveyed for the Atles Lingüístic del Domini Català are described. The results of this analysis are compared to descriptive and normative proposals: grammars, style manuals, dictionaries, and other information sources. En aquest article d'orientació geolingüística i diacrònica, basat fonamentalment en dades de l'Atles lingüístic del domini català (ALDC) i del Corpus Informatitzat del Català Antic (CICA), s'analitzen més de vuitanta denominacions catalanes del crepuscle. D'una banda, se'n proporciona una doble classificació per criteris morfosintàctics, primerament, i motivacionals, després. De l'altra, se n'estudia la distribució geogràfica actual per lexemes, que s'ofereix cartografiada, i quan és possible, es ressegueixen les traces històriques de les diverses denominacions.

The aim of this paper is to analyze a sample of verb morphology belonging to the speech of the Valencian area of Baix Vinalopó, in order to ascertain the effect of Catalan standard forms upon traditional spoken tendencies, once Catalan has been present at school or in the mass media for more than twelve years. More specifically, there is an ongoing morphological change, affecting a number of infinitives, future and conditional tenses of the «naixtre», «ixtrà» or «convenstre» type, as different from the general forms in Catalan «nàixer», «eixirà» and «convèncer».

El diccionari "Voces castellanas i su equivalència en valenciano. Voces valencianas i su equivalencia en castellano" (de l'any 1825 i d'autor desconegut, tot i que està signat amb les inicials C. M. G.) no havia merescut fins ara més atenció que aquella que es dedica a una obra manuscrita que gairebé tots els estudiosos de la lexicografia coneixen indirectament. A current suggestion in the variationist literature is that the predominance of forms like we was in nonstandard varieties of English is predictable in that was-generalization represents a case of the “default singular.” I argue that while the principle of the default singular is a sound one, it is not appropriate as an explanation for was-generalization. What is involved is not a matter of singular versus plural but of r-forms of the past tense of to be versus s-forms, with forms like were, war , wor representing the r-variant and was, wiz , wus the s-variant. Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) as an Emergent System: A Dynamic Systems Theory Perspective

This paper sets out to present a novel construal of one of the notions of Vygotskian cultural-historical theory viz., zone of proximal development (ZPD) drawing upon dynamic systems theory. The principal thesis maintains that ZDP is an emergent and dynamic system which is engendered by a dialectical concatenation of psychogenesic and sociogenesic facets of human development over time. It is reasoned that Vygotskian cultural-historical theory of human development, by invoking dialectical logic, has transcended Cartesian substance dualism and in turn has proffered a monistic and process-anchored ontology for emerging becoming of human consciousness.
