Formal Variation and Language Change in Catalan Quantifiers : the Role of Pragmatics

This article studies the formal variation of the masculine singular forms of the quantifiers u/un 'one', algú/algun 'someone, some', ningú/ningun 'no-one, anyone, not one, any, none' and cada u/cada un 'everyone, each one' in contemporary Catalan. The standard uses of these forms are contrasted with dialectal uses, obtained from a thorough search in oral and written corpora. In addition, they are compared with the uses in the other Romance languages and with their historical evolution in Catalan. This PhD thesis examines Italian contemporary literary works (novels and short stories) in which dialect is used as a linguistic variety in combination with the national Italian idiom. The analysis is conducted through the works of four Italian writers, in which multilingualism is particularly significant: Andrea Camilleri, Salvatore Niffoi, Laura Pariani and Andrej Longo. La tesi és un estudi semàntic diacrònic dels cinquanta zoònims llatins més productius de significats figurats o metasèmies; alhora constitueix una anàlisi motivacional de la creació de lèxic nou en general, i zoonímic en particular. Es constata que els zoònims constitueixen segurament el camp semàntic de més capacitat per a un ús figurat metafòric o metonímic. S'analitzen, doncs, les 16 derives semàntiques dels zoònims llatins, que per ordre de major freqüència a menor freqüència són les següents: noms de persona (antropònims), noms de plantes o fruits (fitònims), noms de caràcter, especialment insults i termes afectuosos (etònims), noms de lloc (topònims), noms d'animals procedents de noms…

The study of the syntactic variation of the dialects of a language is a good instrument to understand the general properties of language and the syntactic principles that govern the limits of variation in sentence structure. This paper deals with two topics of Catalan sintax, which are given different solutions by the speakers depending on the dialects. One of them is at the interface between syntax and morphology; the other, at the interface between syntax and semantics. Aquesta investigació té com a objectiu principal identificar i localitzar els diversos processos pels quals el valencià forma el seu propi sistema demostratiu, diferent del sistema català general. Al final de l’edat mitjana, el català gesta un sistema ternari a través d’un nou grau intermedi, que emergeix a partir de formes inicialment anafòriques ((aqu)eix, això, aquí) que entren en terreny díctic. No obstant això, durant l’edat moderna ocorren més alteracions. En algunes àrees com la valenciana i la ribagorçana es manté el sistema ternari amb la modificació d’algunes formes (ex. este o ahí).
