Traditionally, the Catalan language has been divided into two great dialectal area: West and East. It was Milà i Fontanals who first established in 1861 such classification of Catalan dialects, based on the criterion of unstressed vowels: the Western dialects keep a, e and o in unstressed syllables, whereas Eastern dialects have evolved into the neutral vowel. Once these criteria have been applied, it has been found that the isoglosses built on the three phonetic phenomena described above are not superimposed, and therefore do not coincide. Several attempts to describe and explain lexical regularities and irregulaties have been made in morphology and semantics. Dialectology and historical grammar have studied phenomena of lexical alternation and change. Yet, applied linguistics has not shown the intrinsic variation of lexic even though there have been, and are, many pedagogical, computer, and lexicographic reasons to describe this complexity. Studies focusing on this issue of variation are relatively recent. There is no grammatical model to thoroughly explain communicative competence available at this point in time. A review of the various sub-dialect classifications of Catalan in the north of the Pais Valencià, together with a proposal distinguishing northern Valencian, with two subdialects, and southern Tortosí in the eastern border with Catalonia, provide an introduction to an elaborate summary of the main dialectal research on the area. This is followed by the features characterizing these subdialects and a description of the area involved. Els criteris de transcripció que presentem s’ajusten als objectius del corpus Parlars (projecte CorDiVal: Elaboració d'un corpus oral dialectal del valencià col·loquial, Ref. GV/2017/094, finançat per la Generalitat Valenciana; https://www.uv.es/corvalc/), és a dir, un corpus orientat a l’estudi de la variació dialectal i diafàsica de la llengua oral. Aquesta segona versió dels criteris és el resultat de diverses proves pilot i pretenen ser un model que facilite al màxim les tasques de tokenització i lematització automàtica.
