The authenticity of Platonic Critias

2020

The article discusses the thesis of Rashed and Auffret, who believe that the Critias, which has until now been considered Platonic by almost all scholars, is spurious, due to some inconsistencies that seem to emerge from a comparison between the prologues of the Critias and the 77-maeus. These contradictions do not seem decisive and can be explained through a different interpretation of the two texts. In addition to the arguments concerning the contents of the work, some linguistic and lexical observations can be added that also confirm the authenticity of the dialogue.

Generating dialogical practices in mental health: experiences from southern norway, 1998-2008.

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10488-013-0479-3 In Norway and many other countries, political guidelines prescribe the development of mental health strategies with both a service user's perspective and a treatment system established by the local authority. The development of new strategies frequently involves challenges regarding procedures and treatment as well as a view of knowledge and humanity. Dialogical practices might provide a solution for these challenges not only because of its procedures but also due to its attitudes tow…

Refugee-background students negotiating academic literacy practices in L2: a dialogical and nexus analytical approach

2022

Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan pakolaistaustaisten opiskelijoiden osallistumista akateemisiin tekstikäytänteisiin toisella kielellä. Näillä opiskelijoilla oli myös aiempaa korkeakoulutusta. Ryhmä on jäänyt aiemmissa tutkimuksissa vähälle huomiolle. Tutkimuksen konteksti on uudenlainen korkeakoulutaustaisille maahanmuuttajille tarkoitettu koulutus, jossa yhdistyvät kieli- ja sisältöopinnot. Tutkin, miten kaksi avainosallistujaa ymmärtää ja ottaa haltuun suomenkielisen laskentatoimen kurssin tekstikäytänteitä osana koulutusta. Teoreettisesti ja metodologisesti tutkimus nojaa dialogiseen lähestymistapaan ja neksusanalyysin viitekehykseen. Ensisijainen aineisto koostui haastatteluista ja vide…

Cesare Pavese’s Il campo di granturco: geographical trails

2021

This article proposes a critical reading of the short story, Il campo di granturco [The Cornfield], by Cesare Pavese. Methodologically and epistemologically, it tries to highlight the existing consonances between literature and geography with regards to three key concepts – the border, the landscape, and the territory – that form an indissoluble connection between human beings and the world. In geography, border, landscape, and territory are regarded as key cognitive mediators within the interaction between the Self and the world. What purpose, then, does reading Pavese from a geographic perspective serve? Why do his works matter within the context of cultural geography? Pavese’s Il campo …

Dialogic struggles and pedagogic innovation

2014

The aim of this research was to explore the way in which talk is used in teacher focus group discussions. The data from these discussions belong to a wider study on the challenges teachers face when introducing foreign-language mediated education. The research presented here provides a careful analysis of the talk between teachers drawing on Bakhtin’s dialogic theory. This theoretical framework allows for the critical consideration of the relationship between the teachers and the cultural context of institutionalised education. The main outcome from this research is the notion of ‘dialogic struggle’ as an important characteristic of and window into thought-in-progress. As a key feature of t…

Aesthetics and Bildung

2012

The article approaches the educational potential of aesthetics and the arts by reviving the notion of Bildung and suggesting an interpretation that emphasizes both its social character and the role of artworks and other aesthetic expressions. Bildung is a dialogic process where human relationships are crucial both for the exchange and the birth of insights. Artworks are described as images (Bilde), which act as intermediaries and points of reference in expressing, communicating and negotiating cultural values. In developing the argument, Immanuel Kant's analysis of aesthetic judgment is read together with his ideas on enlightenment, highlighting the social and political character of judgmen…

The inclusion of non-western artistic traditions in cultural policy:Contrasting social justice and public diplomacy approaches

2017

On both sides of the Atlantic, the dissemination of non-Western artistic traditions among the general public has been hampered by the prevalence of Eurocentric aesthetic standards in cultural institutions and organizations. In recent years, however, some states have taken steps in order to increase the exposure of immigrant-origin artists in a variety of disciplines, including theatre, music, dance, literature, cinema and visual arts. This article offers a systematic comparison of two such initiatives that have been developed at the national level: the Equity Office of the Canada Council for the Arts and Spain’s network of cultural ‘Houses’ (Red de Casas). While the former was assigned a so…

Negotiating the Terminological Borders of ‘Language Mediation’ in English and Italian. A Discussion on the Repercussions of Terminology on the Practi…

2015

Linguistic and cultural mediation has been playing an increasingly important role in contemporary society as a result of the intensification of international exchanges and migration flows; however, the definitions that have been given of it are still rather vague and inconsistent. In some cases linguistic and cultural mediation is seen as a broad superordinate category, comprising a range of different interlinguistic and intercultural activities serving the purpose of facilitating communication across languages, cultures and societies in various areas of civil society: industry, business, trade, law, literature, academia, institutions, public services, etc. In other cases, instead, the defi…
