Resumption of Ventilation at the End of Obstructive Sleep Apneas is not Determined by Diaphragmatic Fatigue
1988
In patients affected by obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) a progressive increase of the force developed by the respiratory muscles is usually observed during the occlusive phase before upper airway patency is resumed (Onal and Lopata, 1986).
Diagnostik und operative Therapie von Phäochromozytomen und Paragangliomen
2010
Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are rare chromaffin tumours that represent an exceptional challenge for the surgeon because of the concomitant secretion of catecholamines. Recent findings on the genetic background of hereditary tumours have challenged the rule of the 10 % -tumour and significantly changed the requirements for preoperative work-up and surgical strategy. Early detection of malignant growth or multiple hereditary tumours is the goal of imaging techniques such as CT/MRI, (123)I-MIBG-(SPECT) or (18)F-DOPA-PET. However, in the absence of metastasis, reliable differentiation between -benign and malignant growth is preoperatively and even histopathologically rarely possible. A…

Mild Aerobic Exercise Training Hardly Affects the Diaphragm ofmdxMice
2017
In the mdx mice model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), mild endurance exercise training positively affected limb skeletal muscles, whereas few and controversial data exist on the effects of training on the diaphragm. The diaphragm was examined in mdx (C57BL/10ScSn-Dmdmdx) and wild-type (WT, C57BL/10ScSc) mice under sedentary conditions (mdx-SD, WT-SD) and during mild exercise training (mdx-EX, WT-EX). At baseline, and after 30 and 45 days (training: 5 d/wk for 6 weeks), diaphragm muscle morphology and Cx39 protein were assessed. In addition, tissue levels of the chaperonins Hsp60 and Hsp70 and the p65 subunit of nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB) were measured in diaphragm, gastrocnemius, and q…
Effects of mild aerobic exercise training on the diaphragm in mdx mice
2016
Mild endurance exercise training positively affects limb skeletal muscle in the mdx mice model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). However, few and controversial data are available on the effects of mild exercise training on the diaphragm of mdx mice. The diaphragm was examined in mdx and wild type mice either under sedentary conditions (mdx-SD, WT-SD) or during mild exercise training (mdx-EX, WT-EX). At baseline and after 30 and 45 days of training (5 d/wk for 6 weeks), diaphragm muscle morphology and Cx39 protein were assessed. In addition, tissue levels of the chaperonin Hsp60 were measured at the same time points in gastrocnemius, quadriceps and diaphragm in each experimental group. A…
The role of MRI in traumatic rupture of the diaphragm. Our experience in three cases and review of the literature.
2003
PURPOSE: To evaluate the role and effectiveness of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in blunt diaphragmatic injuries by reviewing the literature and our experience in three cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the medical records and MRI findings of three patients with diaphragmatic injury due to blunt abdominal trauma. All patients were previously examined with chest X-ray and CT and later with MRI at our institution. Coronal and sagittal SE TI-w and fast SE T2-w sequence images were acquired. All patients underwent surgery. RESULTS: MRI showed a 5.5 cm tear in the left hemidiaphragmatic dome with herniation of the stomach and colon into the thoracic cavity in the first case; a 1 cm te…
