Mushrooms as biomonitors of heavy metals contamination in forest areas

2018

The aim of the research was to assess the level of contamination with heavy metals (manganese, iron, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium and lead) in two forest areas selected in different places in Poland: the first one in the Swietokrzyskie Province (forests of the Staporkow Forest Division) and the second one in the Opolskie Province (forests of the Kup Forest Division). The degree of contamination of these forest areas with analytes was found using edible large-fruited mushrooms naturally occurring there - the research was carried out using passive biomonitoring method. Heavy metals in mushrooms (separately in stems and hats) as well as in soil samples were determined by atomic absorption spe…

2022

Th is article explores the importance of geographical indications within the new trade policy of the European Union, using the example of the CETA and the dispute over Cypriot halloumi cheese. Th e authors point out that geographical indications occupy an important place within the European Commission’s negotiating strategy primarily because of their signifi cance for the EU economy. In negotiations with third countries, such as Canada, a crucial problem is the diff erent approaches to the protection of typical regional products. Th erefore, the Union is trying to transfer its internal solutions to the international level. Th e detail of regulations, combined with the mixed nature of new tr…

The intimate relationship between food and place branding: a cultural semiotic approach

2022

Over the past ten years, food and places have been at the epicenter of sophisticated branding strategies. On the one hand, there has been enormous growth in the number and complexity of branding devices such as ‘geographical indications’ (GIs) that aim to establish cultural associations between local food products and places of origin. On the other hand, cities, regions, and states use cuisine, ingredients, and traditional dishes in destination marketing strategies to introduce food identity as a distinctive element in the brand image of a place. These processes have been extensively studied by place branding researchers, inasmuch as by social and human scientists at large, while highlighti…

General Practitioners-CommunityPharmacists practice groups: Analysis of the potentialities and limits of this practice through its implementation in …

2023

Practice groups involving general practitioners and community pharmacists have been developed in several European countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland) since the 1980s. Each country has implemented this practice using a different model with similarities but also specificities. Each model has encountered different dynamics during its implementation thanks to a significant and even growing participation of professionals in the Netherlands and Switzerland and, to a lesser extent, in Belgium. According to the research that has studied the implementation of these models, the potential of this practice is important in terms of improving the quality of drug prescription and in its cost…

Why Do European Venture Capital Companies Syndicate?

2002

Financial theory, resource-based theory and access to deal flow are used to explain syndication practices among European venture capital (VC) firms. The desire to share risk and increase portfolio diversification is a more important motive for syndication than the desire to access additional intangible resources or deal flow. Access to resources is, however, more important for non-lead than for lead investors. When resource-based motives are more important, the propensity to syndicate increases. Syndication intensity is higher for young VC firms and for VC firms, specialised in a specific investment stage. Finally, syndication strategies are similar across European countries, but differ fro…

SIRM-SIAAIC consensus, an Italian document on management of patients at risk of hypersensitivity reactions to contrast media

2020

Abstract Hypersensitivity reactions (HRs) to contrast media (CM) can be distinguished in immune-mediated (including allergic reactions) and non-immune-mediated reactions, even if clinical manifestations could be similar. Such manifestations range from mild skin eruptions to severe anaphylaxis, making it important for radiologists to know how to identify and manage them. A panel of experts from the Società Italiana di Radiologia Medica e Interventistica (SIRM) and the Società Italiana di Allergologia, Asma e Immunologia Clinica (SIAAIC) provided a consensus document on the management of patients who must undergo radiological investigations with CM. Consensus topics included: the risk stratif…

Web 2.0 under the light of free software

2009

The development of Web 2.0 has favoured a closer relation between Internet users and the different web applications that facilitate creating, sharing and structuring digital information in a horizontal and collaborative way through so-called social software. Social software includes tools that are familiar to us all, such as chats, forums, blogs, wikis, syndication standards (RSS type), social tagging, multimedia file sharing, social networking, etc. They are tools oriented to give the user a greater capacity of interaction, and a stronger control over the content and the format in which they can be presented.

Una lectura del "Llibre de meravelles" como ars praedicandi

2007

The «Llibre de meravelles» is one of the best known works by Ramon Llull because of its literary dimension. Both this and the structure of the text correlate with contemporary texts of encyclopaedic character. However, a contextualization of the book within Llull’s production, especially in relation to his former novel (Blanquerna), can make important contributions to a new approach to the book, in order to interpret it as a manual of predication adapted to Llull’s particular conception. Which his conception is, which purpose Felix’s examples have in the book, and how the work integrates in Llull’s conception of relationships between faith and reason, is the subject of the present article.

Endovascular treatment of spontaneous isolated abdominal aortic dissection

2016

Isolated abdominal aortic dissection is a rare clinical disease representing only 1.3% of all dissections. There are a few case series reported in the literature. The causes of this pathology can be spontaneous, iatrogenic, or traumatic. Most patients are asymptomatic and symptoms are usually abdominal or back pain, while claudication and lower limb ischemia are rare. Surgical and endovascular treatment are two valid options with acceptable results. We herein describe nine cases of symptomatic spontaneous isolated abdominal aortic dissection, out of which four successfully were treated with an endovascular approach between July 2003 and July 2013. All patients were men, smokers, symptomati…
