Introduction: Since 2008, new oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have been approved for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients receiving hip or knee replacement surgery, prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE). Premarketing randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of NOACs demonstrated their non-inferiority in terms of efficacy vs. warfarin (traditional oral anticoagulant–TOA), with lower risk of serious adverse drug reactions, especially cerebral hemorrhages. The paper analyses the final phase in the life of of Daša Drndić’s Belladonna’s protagonist. In the last years of his existence, Andreas Ban’s consciousness is dominated by the thoughts about illness and the nearing retirement. Commonly, both these phenomena mark the threshold of an old age. When it comes to this particular character, they amplify the sensation of solitude (initially stemming from the keen sense of criticism that Ban displays) as well as impotence (connected to the disagreement with the existence of asenile and poor life of an aged man to which Ban is doomed). Background: According to some current guidelines, extended thromboprophylaxis after hip and knee arthroplasties is recommended. Outpatient prophylaxis with low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) is an important part of this prophylaxis, although the rates of adherence to these regimens is not known. Questions/purposes: We determined (1) the degree of nonadherence (NA) of patients with LMWH outpatient prophylaxis, and (2) whether specific independent factors explain NA. The Nature of Transannular Interactions in E4N4 and E82+ (E = S, Se)

The electronic structures of tetrachalcogen tetranitrides, E4N4, and octachalcogen dications, E82+, and the nature of their intramolecular E···E interactions (E = S, Se) was studied with high-level theoretical methods. The results reveal that the singlet ground states of both systems have a surprisingly large correlation contribution which functions to weaken and therefore lengthen the cross-ring E–E bond. The observed correlation effects are primarily static in E4N4, whereas in E82+ the dynamic part largely governs the total correlation contribution.
