Vibrio harveyi was isolated from internal organs or ulcers of diseased and apparently healthy gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultured in several fish farms located on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The prevalence of the bacterium was significantly higher in European sea bass than in gilthead sea bream, and was closely related to the season in both fish species, occurring almost exclusively on warm months (June to November). Glucocorticoid hormone receptors (GR), members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily, are ligand-dependent transcription factors expressed in various tissues by binding to specific DNA sequences. Since glucocorticoids have a role in maintaining the homeostatic status in fish, we previously cloned and sequenced a GR (DlGR1) of adult Dicentrarchus labrax; we also showed mRNA expression (in situ hybridization) and tissue immunohistochemical localization of DlGR1 in several organs. By-products of farmed European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) as a potential source of n-3 PUFA

Total by-products (TBP) obtained by filleting farmed and wild European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were analyzed to evaluate if, on the basis of the percentage yield, total lipid content and fatty acid composition, they can be considered a resource of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Results show that TBP from intensively farmed fish (IFF) contain higher total lipid content and have a higher level of n-3 PUFA rich in eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosaexaenoic acid (DHA), compared to extensively farmed fish (EFF) and to wild fish (WF) (P < 0.05). This difference may suggest a way of promotion of TBP from IFF sea bass through the n-3 PUFA recovery by extraction.

The effect of rearing temperature on gonad differentiation and growth was evaluated in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). One control group (CG, n = 60) and two experimental groups (EG1, n = 30; EG2, n = 30) were selected. CG was reared at 15.0 °C during 10 days post-hatch (dph) and at 19.0 °C throughout the remaining larval and post-larval development.
