The C-terminal antibody binding domain ofCandida albicansmp58 represents a protective epitope during candidiasis
2003
The 58-kDa surface mannoprotein of Candida albicans (mp58) elicits strong antibody responses during infection. Epitope mapping with sera from patients with candidiasis and control individuals indicated the presence of multiple IgG-reactive continuous epitopes on the protein, expanding both the amino- and carboxy-terminal domains and several internal regions. These immunoreactive regions were similar to the ones previously identified using sera from immunized animals. Two of the epitopic regions (including the C-terminal domain) showed increased reactivity with antibodies present in sera from patients with candidiasis as compared to control individuals. Patients who survived the infection di…
Dental considerations in patients with respiratory problems.
2011
Many respiratory disorders can compromise routine dental care and require special treatment for the affected patients. Patients often visit the dental clinic with respiratory problems already diagnosed by other specialists. The dental professional therefore must provide correct dental care in the context of such a diagnosis. The present study offers a literature review of those respiratory disorders which can have implications for dental care. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma require special measures, such as working with the patient in the vertical position, since some of these subjects do not tolerate decubitus. On the other hand, patients with COPD can suffer infec…
The global challenge of Candida auris in the intensive care unit
2019
Since the first isolation of Candida auris in 2009, scientific community has witnessed an exponential emergence of infection episodes and outbreaks in different world regions. It is hard to predict future C. auris diffusion. By now, global surveillance, improving knowledge, and taking care of the A.U.R.I.S. major issues may be the best ways to face C. auris challenge
Surgical pathology and the diagnosis of invasive visceral yeast infection: two case reports and literature review
2013
Invasive mycoses are life-threatening opportunistic infections that have recently emerged as a cause of morbidity and mortality following general and gastrointestinal surgery. Candida species are the main fungal strains of gut flora. Gastrointestinal tract surgery might lead to mucosal disruption and cause Candida spp. to disseminate in the bloodstream. Here we report and discuss the peculiar clinical and morphological presentation of two cases of gastrointestinal Candida albicans lesions in patients who underwent abdominal surgery. Although in the majority of cases reported in the literature, diagnosis was made on the basis of microbiological criteria, we suggest that morphological feature…
Procalcitonin for the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis: what is the evidence?
2017
Abstracts Procalcitonin is a widely used marker for the evaluation of infection and sepsis and to guide antibiotic therapy. During the last decade, several studies evaluated its role and diagnostic performance as a surrogate marker for the identification of Candida spp. in suspected invasive candidiasis. A low serum level and a favorable negative predictive value are the main findings for procalcitonin in this setting. The aim of this report is to provide an updated brief summary of the evidence supporting the use of PCT for the management of invasive candidiasis.
Analysis of Candida auris candidemia cases in an Intensive Care Unit of a tertiary hospital
2021
Abstract Candida auris is a multi-resistant emerging fungus. Objectives To analyze the relationship between colonization by C. auris and the appearance of invasive candidiasis. Description of the sample of colonized patients, risk factors for colonization and/or infection, and calculation of mortality rates. Methodology Longitudinal observational study in an anesthesia intensive care unit in 2018. Results 2130 patients were admitted. Surveillance studies were positive in 124 patients; 118 cases involved skin colonization and 52 were pharyngeal. Patients with a positive blood culture were identified. A statistically significant association was found between pharyngeal colonization and the ap…

77Se NMR Spectroscopic, DFT MO, and VBT Investigations of the Reversible Dissociation of Solid (Se6I2)[AsF6]2•2SO2 in Liquid SO2 to Solutions Contain…
2009
The composition of a complex equilibrium mixture formed upon dissolution of (Se6I2)[AsF6]2·2SO2 in SO2(l) was studied by 77Se NMR spectroscopy at −70 °C with both natural-abundance and enriched 77Se-isotope samples (enrichment 92%). Both the natural-abundance and enriched NMR spectra showed the presence of previously known cations 1,4-Se6I22+, SeI3+, 1,1,4,4-Se4I42+, Se102+, Se82+, and Se42+. The structure and bonding in 1,4-Se6I22+ and 1,1,4,4-Se4I42+ were explored using DFT calculations. It was shown that the observed Se−Se bond alternation and presence of thermodynamically stable 4pπ−4pπ Se−Se and 4pπ−5pπ Se−I bonds arise from positive charge delocalization from the formally positively c…
Infecciones oportunistas c…
Huoli kuvasta : merkitys, mieli, materiaalisuus
2017
This research is a hybrid of a monograph and a multiple-article dissertation. Its theoretical starting point is a phenomenologically based view of the being of the image, in which Georges Didi-Huberman´s work plays a central role. For him, as well as for Mieke Bal, a historical work of art is never only in the distant past only but also exists in the present actuality. This makes the temporality of the Image extremely complex. The Image can be encountered only “pre-posterously” (Bal) or by reading it “against the grain” (Didi-Huberman). The Image is necessarily anachronistic; it is not in time but opens up time. This fact should be taken into account not only in art history, but also in art…
