In Revision: Theoretical Frameworks

2018

A central ambition in the first section is to establish an understanding of the music industries—the field of study—as well as change—the different dynamics within and around the music industries. I consider the latter understanding to be dependent on the former—that if we don’t have a proper concept of the field of study, then it becomes difficult to define and assess the changes happening to it. The music industries have indeed been impacted by digital change and innovation. It has become a reference point for the difficulties some industries have faced, adapting to a new digital economy. However, many of the accounts on the music industries’ difficult digital transitions tend to diminish…

“Diagnosing” the Need or in “Need” of a Diagnosis? Reconceptualizing Educational Need

2017

This chapter is based on compulsory school experiences of students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their parents in the educational context of Finland. Located in the theoretical framework of Disability Studies, the chapter aims to contribute to theory of inclusive education by initiating a new dialogue on conceptual foundations of inclusive schooling. In this regard, the chapter first deconstructs the concept of educational need that stems from the field of traditional special education as contradictory to the original ideals of inclusive education. It then moves on to reconstruct the concept of educational need in accordance with the foundational values …

La relación con los animales: un nuevo ámbito de la intervención socioeducativa

2014

This article analyses the educational approaches towards the animal-human relationship which have been developed during the last 20 years. The article establishes a chain of states in that relationship and presents the reasons why those states are consecutive or, occasionally, simultaneous. Next, the different European profiles of social educators are reviewed to see which of these are more open towards educational action with animals, something which could be considered a new field for educators if they have adequate professional training. A series of European (and some American) websites are analysed in order to determine their approach towards the human-animal relationship. Although most…

Education and Employment: A Survey of French Research

1981

There is little doubt that at the end of the 1 960s, French research into the education-income relationship as a means of analysing also the relationship between training and employment remained unadvanced by comparison with work of this kind undertaken in English-speaking countries. Mainly attributable to a lack of appropriate data, this weakness incited the public authorities to develop, at the beginning of the 1970s, the gathering of such information, first on the cost of education, and then on wage levels. Thenceforth, the education-income relationship was subject to close analysis, while studies were carried out to elucidate the influence of variables other than education itself. Indee…

From development to power relations and territorial governance: Increasing the leadership role of LEADER Local Action Groups in Spain

2015

Abstract The establishment of Local Action Groups (LAGs) within the framework of LEADER with the participation of public and private actors through a bottom–up approach (i.e., the empowerment of local society) and the management of local development strategies constitutes one of the major innovations in the field of rural policy in Spain. The protagonism of local society and the local management of development processes entail the introduction and experimentation of previously unknown mechanisms of territorial governance. However, the efficacy of this rhetoric has been seriously limited in its practical implementation, with difficulties conceiving truly integrated and multi-sectoral strateg…

Quality of higher education and earnings: evidence from Finland using field-of-study-level quality measures

2013

Using administrative data from Finland, this paper empirically examines the relationship between university graduates’ early career earnings and three measures of university quality: the number of teachers per student, the number of publications per researcher and the number of applicants per admitted student. A distinction to previous studies is made by paying special attention to field-of-study heterogeneity: the quality measures are allowed to vary by a student’s field, while the heterogeneity of earnings and individuals across fields is accounted for in the analysis. For the most part, the results indicate that the relationship between institution quality and earnings is rather weak; ho…

Civil society organizations and social innovation. How and to what extent are they influencing social and political change?

2017

This study aims to understand how civil society organizations (CSOs) perform and influence public arenas. The focus of this paper is the transformative scope of social innovation initiatives promoted by CSOsin two public arenas in Brazil: the fight against electoral corruption and the protection of children and adolescents’ rights. The research consisted of three stages: 1) controversy mapping to understand the configuration ofthese public arenas and compare the trajectories of the public problems studied; 2) observation of the “field of experience” of some CSOs that perform in these arenas; and 3) analysis of “political grammars” produced in public arenas, connecting them to the performanc…

Sector-based corporate citizenship

2010

This paper approaches the much-debated issue of corporate citizenship (CC). Many models depict the development process of CC, and yet attempts to find one extensive definition remain in progress. We argue that more than one type of citizenship may be needed to fully describe the concept. So far, social factors have dominated the definitions of CC, but citizenship functions can also be found in other areas. In fact, for maximum benefit, the type of citizenship should be tied to the sector and business field of the corporation in question. Using data drawn from three internationally operating corporations headquartered in Finland, we introduce three different types of CC that are in line with…

Entrepreneurial Intentions: Moving the Field Forwards

2021

The purpose of this article is to articulate reasoning as to why there is a pressing need for a contextually based temporal approach towards the study of entrepreneurial intentions. Having done so, a potential means by which this can be achieved is put forth through assuming a socially situated perspective that links intentions, the entrepreneurial process of new venture creation, and a model of action abstractness. A conceptual model is proposed taking into consideration the entrepreneurial intention domain ‘as is’, ‘as should be’ and ‘as could be’. Value of current practice is assessed and challenged in a bid to stimulate new thinking in the area. The dynamic model provided contributes t…
