Latvian Multiculturalism, Postcolonialism, and World Literature
2020
The aim of this chapter is to discuss the complexity of the self-consciousness of the inhabitants of contemporary Latvia from a postcolonial perspective. This approach demonstrates how the experience of a small nation helps to reveal the common roots of Europe and to build both theoretical and practical bridges between different societies and their members. It also contextualizes the relation of so-called small literatures to the global literary field. The highly acclaimed novel of contemporary Latvian author, Inga Ābele, Klūgu mūks (2014), about the life and work of the Catholic priest and politician Francis Trasuns, provides the focus of attention and serves as the background for a case s…

The Concept of Culture in Media Studies: A Critical Review of Academic Literature
2014
This study examines the way culture has been researched in media studies and suggests how critical intercultural communication could contribute to the field. A literature review was conducted and articles (N=114) published in peer-reviewed journals between 2003 and 2013 were collected. Results show that studies dealing with media and culture do not systematically define the concept of culture. Findings also indicate that culture is oftentimes taken for granted instead of being problematized and addressed as a source of struggle. Advantages of using a critical intercultural communication framework to examine culture are discussed.
In attesa al pronto soccorso. Riti di passaggio, riti d’istituzione e riti di socializzazione
2016

BORDERS AND BORDER CROSSING BETWEEN ART WORLDS. Successful attempts and epic failures to enter new domains in recent British art
2016
The paper attempts to answer, whether it is possible for successful artists in one specific sector to access the domain of another artistic field at their free will. In doing so, this contribution analyses the possible existence of borders and gatekeepers between different art worlds. The aim is not just finding or defining boundaries between art fields, but rather understanding, if boundaries can be pierced through, as well as the conditions that might hinder acceptance. Moving from an art theoretical and philosophical perspective, the present paper will discuss the thesis of Pierre Bourdieu, Howard Becker, Berys Gaut and Joseph Margolis on boundary conditions in the arts. Subsequently the…

Sports and Community Well-Being
2017
This chapter explores the relationship between sports and community well-being, taking into account factors such as social bonds, social and cultural integration, health, improved quality of life, and the enhancement of personal and community well-being. Well-being is a concept with a long history and development. Originally used in the field of philosophy, it then spread to psychology. Community well-being is a relatively recent, little-explored term, which builds on the concepts of well-being and quality of life. This chapter provides a theoretical assessment based on the concepts of well-being, community well-being, and sports, distinguishing the latter from mere physical activity. Final…
