Many modern systems record various types of parameter values. Numerical values are relatively convenient for data analysis tools because there are many methods to measure distances and similarities between them. The application of dimensionality reduction techniques for data sets with such values is also a well known practice. Nominal (i.e., categorical) values, on the other hand, encompass some problems for current methods. Lower semicontinuity of weak supersolutions to the porous medium equation

Weak supersolutions to the porous medium equation are defined by means of smooth test functions under an integral sign. We show that nonnegative weak supersolutions become lower semicontinuous after redefinition on a set of measure zero. This shows that weak supersolutions belong to a class of supersolutions defined by a comparison principle.

The in-medium dynamics of heavy particles are governed by transport coefficients. The heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient, $\ensuremath{\kappa}$, is an object of special interest in the literature, but one which has proven notoriously difficult to estimate, despite the fact that it has been computed by weak-coupling methods at next-to-leading order accuracy, and by lattice simulations of the pure SU(3) gauge theory. Tuning the Structure of Galacturonate Hydrogels: External Gelation by Ca, Zn, or Fe Cationic Cross-Linkers

International audience; We show here how the nature of various divalent cations M2+ (Ca2+, Zn2+, or Fe2+) influences the structure and mechanical properties of ionotropic polygalacturonate (polyGal) hydrogels designed by the diffusion of cations along one direction (external gelation). All hydrogels exhibit strong gradients of polyGal and cation concentrations, which are similar for all studied cations with a constant ratio R = [M2+]/[Gal] equal to 0.25, showing that every M2+ cation interacts with four galacturonate (Gal) units all along the gels. Monitoring of BrO/SO2-ratios has recently been correlated with changes in the activity of a volcano. High-performance liquid chromatographic determination of sumatriptan after in vitro transdermal diffusion studies.

A simple, accurate, precise and rapid HPLC method with UV detection has been validated in order to determine the in vitro transdermal absorption of sumatriptan succinate. The HPLC method is a modification of that described by Nozal et al. [M.J. Nozal, J.L. Bernal, L. Toribio, M.T. Martin, F.J. Diez, J. Pharm. Biomed. Anal. 30 (2002) 285-291]. Separation was carried out on a 250 mm Kromasil C18 column at room temperature. The detector response, at 282.7 nm, was found to be linear in a concentration range between 0.145 and 145 microM. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.019 microM and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.145 microM.

Selective chlorine determination by gas diffusion in a tandem flow assembly and spectrophotometric detection with o-dianisidine

Abstract A fast, selective, sensitive and automated method for determination of free chlorine in industrial formulations and water samples is proposed. The automation of the flow assembly is based on the “tandem flow” approach, which uses a set of solenoid valves acting as independent switches. The operating cycle for obtaining a typical analytical transient signal can easily be programmed by means of friendly software running in the Windows environment. Contact and contactless diffuse reflectance spectroscopy: potential for recovery monitoring of vascular lesions after intense pulsed light treatment.

Optical fiber contact probe diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and remote multispectral imaging methods in the spectral range of 400 to 1100 nm were used for skin vascular malformation assessment and recovery tracing after treatment by intense pulsed light. The results confirmed that oxy-hemoglobin relative changes and the optical density difference between lesion and healthy skin in the spectral region 500 to 600 nm may be successfully used for objective appraisal of the therapy effect.
