Unbiased Inference for Discretely Observed Hidden Markov Model Diffusions

We develop a Bayesian inference method for diffusions observed discretely and with noise, which is free of discretisation bias. Unlike existing unbiased inference methods, our method does not rely on exact simulation techniques. Instead, our method uses standard time-discretised approximations of diffusions, such as the Euler--Maruyama scheme. Our approach is based on particle marginal Metropolis--Hastings, a particle filter, randomised multilevel Monte Carlo, and importance sampling type correction of approximate Markov chain Monte Carlo. International audience; Understanding how the network topology affects the spread of an epidemic is a main concern in order to develop efficient immunization strategies. While there is a great deal of work dealing with the macroscopic topological properties of the networks, few studies have been devoted to the influence of the community structure. Furthermore, while in many real-world networks communities may overlap, in these studies non-overlapping community structures are considered. Dimensionality Reduction via Regression in Hyperspectral Imagery

This paper introduces a new unsupervised method for dimensionality reduction via regression (DRR). The algorithm belongs to the family of invertible transforms that generalize Principal Component Analysis (PCA) by using curvilinear instead of linear features. DRR identifies the nonlinear features through multivariate regression to ensure the reduction in redundancy between he PCA coefficients, the reduction of the variance of the scores, and the reduction in the reconstruction error. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is widely used to characterize, in vivo, the white matter of the central nerve system (CNS). This biological tissue contains much anatomic, structural and orientational information of fibers in human brain. Spectral data from the displacement distribution of water molecules located in the brain tissue are collected by a magnetic resonance scanner and acquired in the Fourier domain. After the Fourier inversion, the noise distribution is Gaussian in both real and imaginary parts and, as a consequence, the recorded magnitude data are corrupted by Rician noise. In this research work we introduce and analyze an explicit conservative finite difference scheme to approximate the solution of initial-boundary value problems for a class of limited diffusion Fokker-Planck equations under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We show stability and positivity preserving property under a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy parabolic time step restriction. We focus on the relativistic heat equation as a model problem of the mentioned limited diffusion Fokker-Planck equations. Fernand de Montessus de Ballore (1851-1923) est considéré comme un des précurseurs de la sismologie moderne. On lui doit une importante production scientifique dans ce domaine : il a notamment établi, par des relevés rigoureux et nombreux, que les tremblements de terre étaient en relation avec la géologie et non avec les phases de la lune ou les volcans souterrains comme on le supposait au début du XXe siècle. Officier de l'armée française, alors en garnison à Nîmes, il écrit en 1886 au scientifique genevois Louis Soret (1827-1890), qui fait partie de la commission suisse chargée d'étudier les séismes dans ce pays. C'est l'analyse de cette lettre à Soret qui fait l'objet de notre article.
Non-isothermal mass transfer of ferrocolloids through porous membrane

Abstract The present paper deals with transport properties of ferrofluid nanoparticles in non-isothermal capillary-porous layer. Experiment establishes that the temperature difference, which is applied across the layer, induces a thermoosmotic pressure gradient directed toward increasing temperature. The measurement results are interpreted in a frame of phenomenology of linear irreversible thermodynamics. The transport coefficients are evaluated comparing the measured separation curves with approximate solution of the corresponding mass transfer problem.
Effects of confinement on insulin amyloid fibrils formation.

Insulin, a 51-residue protein universally used in diabetes treatment, is known to produce amyloid fibrils at high temperature and acidic conditions. As for other amyloidogenic proteins, the mechanisms leading to nucleation and growth of insulin fibrils are still poorly understood. We here report a study of the fibrillation process for insulin confined in a suitable polymeric hydrogel, with the aim of ascertain the effects of a reduced protein mobility on the various phases of the process. In this paper we explore the adoption of a complex networked technology — that of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) — in the context of Hong Kong. EDI forms a complex and interorganizational innovation and therefore we suggest a multi-theoretical framework to examine its diffusion. The framework takes into account institutional, industry specific and organizational factors in the study of diffusion processes and thus extends the analysis beyond organizational borders. Using the framework we deliver an account of the EDI diffusion in Hong Kong based on field study data.
