Instruction of Digital Reading Strategies Based on Eye-Movements Modeling Examples

During the last decade, several studies have proposed and tested different instructional methods for teaching digital reading strategies to young students. In this study, we have tested the effectiveness of a program combining eye-movements modeling examples (EMMEs) and contrasting cases to instruct ninth-grade students how to plan, evaluate, and monitor their digital reading. EMMEs are videos that display a dot representing the eye movements of a model and an oral transcription of her thoughts while answering a specific question in a hypertext. Previous research have found evidences of both, low traditional literacy skills (e.g. reading) and low digital literacy skills (computers and Internet skills) in the population of young students with intellectual disabilities ID). Literacy Skills and Online Research and Comprehension : Struggling Readers Face Difficulties

The present study evaluated the extent to which literacy skills (reading fluency, written spelling, and reading comprehension), together with nonverbal reasoning, prior knowledge, and gender, are related to students’ online research and comprehension (ORC) performance. The ORC skills of 426 sixth graders were measured using a Finnish adaptation of the Online Research and Comprehension Assessment. Results of a structural equation model showed that these ORC skills were divided into six highly correlated factors, and that they formed a common factor in ORC. This study evaluated the relation between sixth graders' (N = 426) teacher-rated difficulties in attention and executive function (EF) and their comprehension skills. Reading comprehension was assessed with a multiple-choice task and online research and comprehension (ORC) with a problem-solving task. The analyses were controlled for gender, reading fluency and nonverbal reasoning. Argument graph as a tool for promoting collaborative online reading

This study explored how the construction of an argument graph promotes students' collaborative online reading compared to note-taking. Upper secondary school students (n = 76) worked in pairs. The pairs were asked to search for and read source material on the Web for a joint essay and either construct an argument graph or take notes during online reading. The data consist of transcription protocols of student pairs' discussions and joint essays. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, millaisia ammatillisen kehittymisen kannalta merkityksellisiä oppimisen paikkoja rakentui luokanopettajaopiskelijoiden ilmiölähtöisellä kurssilla, jossa tutkittavana ilmiönä oli mielen hyvinvoinnin digitaalinen lukutaito. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu 38 opiskelijan päiväkirjoista ja kurssin loppukirjoitelmista. Tulokset osoittavat neljä pääasiallista oppimisen paikkaa: käsitekarttatehtävät, artikkelien lukeminen, mielen hyvinvointia tukevien digitaalisten ratkaisujen arviointi opiskelijaryhmässä ja kouluvierailut.
