Artificial intelligence for affective computing : an emotion recognition case study.
2020
This chapter provides an introduction on the benefits of artificial intelligence (Al) techniques for the field of affective computing, through a case study about emotion recognition via brain (electroencephalography EEG) signals. Readers are first pro-vided with a general description of the field, followed by the main models of human affect, with special emphasis to Russell's circumplex model and the pleasur-arousal-dominance (PAD) model. Finally, an AI-based method for the detection of affect elicited via multimedia stimuli is presented. The method combines both connectivity-and channel-based EEG features with a selection method that considerably reduces the dimensionality of the data and …
Dynamics of Colloidal Hard Spheres in Thin Aqueous Suspension Layers—Particle Tracking by Digital Image Processing and Brownian Dynamics Computer Sim…
1993
Abstract A new experimentally simple technique is introduced for studying dynamical properties of hard sphere colloids in thin aqueous suspension layers by light-microscopy observation supported by computer-aided digital image processing. The thickness of the layers of the colloidal samples confined between two smooth glass plates is accurately adjusted by monodisperse "spacer" spheres which are larger than the diffusing spheres. Tracking of single particles in concentrated phases is accomplished using fluorescence light microscopy where a few dyed particles are mixed with the undyed colloidal spheres of the same size. First results are presented for the self-diffusion coefficient—(i) in ve…
Forward doubly-virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon in chiral perturbation theory: The subtraction function and moments of unpolarized structur…
2020
The forward doubly-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) off the nucleon contains a wealth of information on nucleon structure, relevant to the calculation of the two-photon-exchange effects in atomic spectroscopy and electron scattering. We report on a complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation of low-energy VVCS in chiral perturbation theory ($\chi$PT). Here we focus on the unpolarized VVCS amplitudes $T_1(\nu, Q^2)$ and $T_2(\nu, Q^2)$, and the corresponding structure functions $F_1(x, Q^2)$ and $F_2(x,Q^2)$. Our results are confronted, where possible, with "data-driven" dispersive evaluations of low-energy structure quantities, such as nucleon polarizabilities. We find significant dis…

Introduction: Digital health technologies such as self-monitoring devices and apps are becoming increasingly important as tools to promote healthy habits and support individuals in their self-care. There is still a scarcity of research that builds on motivational theory to better understand the functioning of digital health technologies. The self-determination theory (SDT) is a macro theory of motivation that delineates three basic psychological needs that are linked to different types of motivation and lead to well-being when satisfied and illbeing when frustrated. Objective: To explore how the use of a digital tool for self-monitoring and communication with healthcare satisfies or frustrat…

Channel Switching Protocols Hinder the Transition to IP World: The Pentagon Story
2019
In this paper, we target the strategy for telecommunications architectures during the transition to the IP-only models. The paper discusses the shifting from circuit switching to packet switching in telecommunications. Particularly, we analyze the coexistence of circuit switching and packet switching technologies in American military communications where each warfare object should have own IP address. The paper discusses the role of multifunction Soft Switches (MFSS). This Soft Switch plays the role of a media gateway between TDM channels and IP channels. As a case, we are passing through the transformation from SS7 signaling to internet protocol, ISDN-based government Defense Red Switch Ne…
Media Literacy in I taly
2019
In Italy, the media literacy (ML) movement has a long grassroots tradition. Main actors are from civil society (academics, associations, church communities, teachers, media professionals, educators), with some growing support from local and national institutions. While digital literacy has stably entered the school system through funds, projects, and teaching resources aimed at improving students' digital skills, only recently has a more sociocultural view of digital technologies developed, thanks also to the National Plan for Digital School issued by the Ministry of Education in 2015. For the future, more commitment to developing the following three important directions is needed: conducti…

Centralization and decentralization are key concepts in debates that focus on the (anti)democratic character of digital societies. Centralization is understood as the control over communication and data flows, and decentralization as giving it (back) to users. Communication and media research focuses on centralization put forward by dominant digital media platforms, such as Facebook and Google, and governments. Decentralization is investigated regarding its potential in civil society, i.e., hacktivism, (encryption) technologies, and grass-root technology movements. As content-based media companies increasingly engage with technology, they move into the focus of critical media studies. Moreo…
Video-based Word Problems or Modelling Projects—Classifying ICT-based Modelling Tasks
2021
Mathematical modelling tasks increasingly feature the use of digital tools and media. In this chapter, we discuss the wide variety of these. Until now, classifications for modelling tasks did not consider the use of tools and media. Therefore, we developed a new classification for ICT-based modelling tasks. One class relates to mathematics; the others differentiate across (1) modelling aspects unrelated to tool and media, (2) the task context, (3) the digital tools and media (CAS, Wikipedia, type of feedback, etc.) and (4) students’ anticipated activities guided by task regulations, such as group work or time restrictions. The classification was validated with three example tasks. A visual …
