The bodily aspects of reading/writing practices are investigated in Finland.The paper is considered more adaptive to varied reading purposes than the screen.Handwriting is described as a more flexible and relaxed practice than typing.Skills determine less than materials and images the practices of reading/writing.Digital interfaces determine the ways we read and write less than suggested. Everyday Appropriations of Information Technology: A Study of Creative Uses of Digital Cameras

Repurposive appropriation is a creative everyday act in which a user invents a novel use for information technology (IT) and adopts it. This study is the first to address its prevalence and predictability in the consumer IT context. In all, 2,379 respondents filled in an online questionnaire on creative uses of digital cameras, such as using them as scanners, periscopes, and storage media. The data reveal that such creative uses are adopted by about half of the users, on average, across different demographic backgrounds. A low power and high resolution data logger for submarine seismic monitoring

The design, implementation and characterization of a digital waveform recorder for ocean bottom seismic monitoring is here reported. The system is capable of synchronously acquiring, and logging on a flash memory bank, four high resolution signals. Thanks to a very careful design of the system architecture and by using robust digital signal processing techniques, two main conflicting issues have been addressed: a high dynamic range, better than 120 dB, usually obtained with high energy demanding converters, and a power consumption as low as 250 mW, hence allowing to easily increase the time of a continuous submarine monitoring session up to 3 months.
Hadronic light-by-light contribution to $$(g-2)_\mu $$ ( g - 2 ) μ from lattice QCD with SU(3) flavor symmetry

We perform a lattice QCD calculation of the hadronic light-by-light contribution to $$(g-2)_\mu $$ ( g - 2 ) μ at the SU(3) flavor-symmetric point $$m_\pi =m_K\simeq 420\,$$ m π = m K ≃ 420 MeV. The representation used is based on coordinate-space perturbation theory, with all QED elements of the relevant Feynman diagrams implemented in continuum, infinite Euclidean space. As a consequence, the effect of using finite lattices to evaluate the QCD four-point function of the electromagnetic current is exponentially suppressed. The comparison of the theoretical and experimental determinations of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g−2)μ constitutes one of the strongest tests of the Standard Model at low energies. We compute the leading hadronic contribution to (g−2)μ using lattice QCD simulations employing Wilson quarks. Gauge field ensembles at four different lattice spacings and several values of the pion mass down to its physical value are used. We apply the O(a) improvement program with two discretizations of the vector current to better constrain the approach to the continuum limit. Rational irreducible characters and rational conjugacy classes in finite groups

We prove that a finite group G G has two rational-valued irreducible characters if and only if it has two rational conjugacy classes, and determine the structure of any such group. Along the way we also prove a conjecture of Gow stating that any finite group of even order has a non-trivial rational-valued irreducible character of odd degree.
Homology of pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with fibered cusps

The Hochschild homology of the algebra of pseudodifferential operators on a manifold with fibered cusps, introduced by Mazzeo and Melrose, is studied and computed using the approach of Brylinski and Getzler. One of the main technical tools is a new convergence criterion for tri-filtered half-plane spectral sequences. Using trace-like functionals that generate the 0 0 -dimensional Hochschild cohomology groups, the index of a fully elliptic fibered cusp operator is expressed as the sum of a local contribution of Atiyah-Singer type and a global term on the boundary. We announce a result relating this boundary term to the adiabatic limit of the eta invariant in a particular case.
Understanding star-fundamental algebras

Star-fundamental algebras are special finite dimensional algebras with involution ∗ * over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero defined in terms of multialternating ∗ * -polynomials. We prove that the upper-block matrix algebras with involution introduced in Di Vincenzo and La Scala [J. Algebra 317 (2007), pp. 642–657] are star-fundamental. Moreover, any finite dimensional algebra with involution contains a subalgebra mapping homomorphically onto one of such algebras. We also give a characterization of star-fundamental algebras through the representation theory of the symmetric group.
