Perceptual Image Representations for Support Vector Machine Image Coding

2007

Support-vector-machine image coding relies on the ability of SVMs for function approximation. The size and the profile of the e-insensitivity zone of the support vector regressor (SVR) at some specific image representation determines (a) the amount of selected support vectors (the compression ratio), and (b) the nature of the introduced error (the compression distortion). However, the selection of an appropriate image representation is a key issue for a meaningful design of the e-insensitivity profile. For example, in image-coding applications, taking human perception into account is of paramount relevance to obtain a good rate-distortion performance. However, depending on the accuracy of t…

Ridge-line optimal detector

2000

Image processing techniques have seen many developments in recent years. Starting from the pioneering work of Canny, Deriche developed a second order recursive filter capable of detecting stepped contours. However, there are other contour shapes that those filters struggle to detect. We describe a new optimal filter sensu Canny for detecting ridge-line contours. This is a third order recursive and even filter. It is dependent on three parameters by which detection accuracy is adjusted. The results obtained by applying this filter to (possibly noise- affected) images are compared with those in the work by Ziou. © 2000 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Calibration of a three-dimensional reconstruction system using a structured light source

2002

We present a method for calibrating a range finder system composed of a camera and a structured light source. The system is used to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3-D) surface of an object. This is achieved by projecting a pattern, represented by a set of regularly spaced spots, on the surface of the object using the structured light source. An image of the illuminated object is next taken and by analyzing the distortion of the projected pattern, the 3-D surface of the object can be reconstructed. This reconstruction operation can be envisaged only if the system is calibrated. Instead of using a classical calibration method, which is based on the determination of the matrices that chara…

Improved locally adaptive least-squares detection of differences in images

2007

We introduce a method for change detection under nonuniform changes of intensity using an improved least-squares method. A locally adaptive normalizing window is correlated with the two images, and a morphological postprocessing is then applied to isolate objects that have been added or removed from the scene. We use a modification of the least-squares solution to get rid of clutter caused by intensity changes that do not satisfy the model assumed for the least-squares solution.

Exploring FPGA Based Lock-in Techniques for Brain Monitoring Applications

2017

Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) systems for e-health applications usually suffer of poor signal detection mainly due to a low end-to-end signal to noise ratio of the electronics chain. Lock-In Amplifiers (LIA) historically represent a powerful technique helping to improve performances in such circumstances. In this work it has been designed and implemented a digital LIA system, based on a Zynq® Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), trying to explore if this technique might improve fNIRS system performances. More broadly, FPGA based solution flexibility has been investigated, with particular emphasis applied to digital filter parameters, needed in the digital LIA, and i…

How Decarbonization, Digitalization and Decentralization are changing key power infrastructures

2018

Abstract This paper addresses the impact over key power infrastructures of the three main drivers for change of these times: Decarbonization, Digitalization and Decentralization. The three phenomena, according to prominent observers, are affecting all fields of our lives but, in the literature, it is difficult to find an analysis of their impact on electrical power systems. The framework proposed in this paper, based on the main power systems evolution models proposed by CIGRE, uses data from open databases and tries to find out general guidelines for power systems development at a worldwide level. Taking as reference the European and COP21 environmental objectives and beyond, the technolog…

Filecasting for streaming content delivery in IP datacast over DVB-H systems

2008

In this paper we investigate the potential gain that can be obtained in DVB-H by delivering streaming content as a succession of time-constrained flies using Application Layer - Forward Error Correction (AL-FEC) for improving the reception for mobile terminals. Compared to the conventional approach with link layer MPE-FEC, this technique allows to increase the robustness of the DVB-H transmission not only as a function of the capacity devoted for error repair (FEC overhead), but also as a function of the number of data bursts coded jointly ("file" or, source data block, size). The main drawback of this approach is an increase of the network latency proportional to the source block size, tha…

Stereoscopic 3D visualization of particle fields reconstructed from digital inline holograms

2010

Abstract Holography is a powerful tool as it codes information, e.g. on 3D positions in a particle field in a single 2D hologram. In digital holography, the holograms are recorded on a digital image sensor. It is a particular challenge to visualize a digital hologram's depth information, such that it can be understood intuitively while retaining the advantages of a numerical reconstruction. In this contribution it is suggested and demonstrated how a numerically constructed volume can be used to calculate stereoscopic views, which even in the case of non-diffuse illumination allow for an intuitive visualization of particles’ positions in 3D space.

Human digital twins and cognitive mimetic

2021

Digital twins – digital models of technical systems and processes – have recently been introduced to work with complex industrial processes. Yet should such models concern only physical objects (as definitions of them often imply), or should users and other human beings also be included? Models that include people have been called human digital twins (HDTs); they facilitate more accurate analyses of technologies in practical use. The cognitive mimetic approach can be used to describe human interactions with technologies. This approach analyses human information processes such as perceiving and thinking to mimic how people process information in order to design intelligent technologies. The …
