Introduction: Expressions of dignity as a clinical phenomenon in nursing homes as expressed by caregivers were investigated. A coherence could be detected between the concepts and phenomena of existence and dignity in relationships and caring culture as a context. Research questions: The purpose of this study was to explore dignity as a core concept in caring, and how healthcare personnel focus on and foster dignity in nursing home residents. Research design: This study has a hermeneutic design. During the Roman Empire period, the ruler was venerated in many ways. Prostration, proskynesis, referring to the emperor as dominus; adora-tio purpurae; manus velatae; observing the ritual silence; and other rituals were supposed to strengthen the emperor’s authority. During the period of Dominate, the Roman freedom was replaced by etiquette at the imperial court. This article discusses only two examples of veneration of the ruler in the Roman Empire period, namely manus velatae and silentiarii. The essay deals with the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from an adult in permanent vegetative state or in a minimally conscious state, in the absence of a will expressed by the patient. The Italian l. n. 219/2017 has not changed matters, because it does not explain how, in this case, autonomy and human dignity can be properly safeguarded. Under a comparative point of view, the essay deals with the French and the English statutory framework governing the scrutiny of any decision to withdraw clinically assisted nutrition and hydration.
Human dignity as a foundational value of peremptory norms in international law

The appeal of the idea of a morally structured, systemized international legal system implied by the jus cogens regime has resulted in an abundance of literature covering different aspects of this normative category. This article discusses a comparatively under-explored issue in this field, that is, the foundational values of peremptory norms and, in particular, invites the reader to consider the value of human dignity as one such underlying value.
