Energy Transfer at the Single-Molecule Level: Synthesis of a Donor-Acceptor Dyad from Perylene and Terrylene Diimides
2013
In 2004, we reported single-pair fluorescence resonance energy transfer (spFRET), based on a perylene diimide (PDI) and terrylene diimide (TDI) dyad (1) that was bridged by a rigid substituted para-terphenyl spacer. Since then, several further single-molecule-level investigations on this specific compound have been performed. Herein, we focus on the synthesis of this dyad and the different approaches that can be employed. An optimized reaction pathway was chosen, considering the solubilities, reactivities, and accessibilities of the building blocks for each individual reaction whilst still using established synthetic techniques, including imidization, Suzuki coupling, and cyclization reacti…

Flexibility of phenylene oligomers revealed by single molecule spectroscopy
2006
The rigidity of a p-phenylene oligomer (p-terphenyl) has been investigated by single molecule confocal fluorescence microscopy. Two different rylene diimide dyes attached to the terminal positions of the oligomer allowed for wavelength selective excitation of the two chromophores. In combination with polarization modulation the spatial orientation of the transition dipoles of both end groups could be determined independently. We have analyzed 597 single molecules in two different polymer hosts, polymethylmethacrylate and Zeonex. On average we find a 22 degrees deviation from the linear gas phase geometry (T = 0 K), indicating a rather high flexibility of the p-phenylene oligomer independent…
Efficient electroluminescence from a perylenediimide fluorophore obtained from a simple solution processed OLED
2009
Simple solution processed organic light emitting diodes are used to screen the performance of two types of highly efficient, narrow band red emitting fluorescent perylenediimides (PDIs). PDIs substituted at the diimide positions seem to form aggregates in the thin film architecture as evidenced by the shifted electroluminescent spectrum. When substituted on the bay position and when used both as the emitting and the electron transporting specie, bright electroluminescence with a narrow width around 610 nm reaching 500 cd m−2 at moderate voltages was observed, demonstrating the usefulness of these fluorophores for OLED applications.
Theoretical investigation of electronic excitation energy transfer in bichromophoric assemblies.
2008
Electronic excitation energy transfer (EET) rates in rylene diimide dyads are calculated using second-order approximate coupled-cluster theory and time-dependent density functional theory. We investigate the dependence of the EET rates on the interchromophoric distance and the relative orientation and show that Forster theory works quantitatively only for donor-acceptor separations larger than roughly 5 nm. For smaller distances the EET rates are over- or underestimated by Forster theory depending on the respective orientation of the transition dipole moments of the chromophores. In addition to the direct transfer rates we consider bridge-mediated transfer originating from oligophenylene un…
Novel cationic copolymers of a polyasparthylhydrazide: synthesis and characterization.
2005
Alpha,beta-poly(asparthylhydrazide) (PAHy), a water soluble synthetic polymer, was functionalized by using EDCI chemistry with 3-(carboxypropyl)trimethyl-ammonium chloride (CPTACl) obtaining carboxypropyltrimethyl ammonium copolymers (PAHy-CPTA). Three PAHy-CPTA copolymers at increasing derivatization degrees (38%, 48%, 58%) were chosen for subsequent investigations. The capability of these copolymers to bind, neutralize, and protect DNA against degradation by DNase II was evalued by gel retardation assay and DNA degradation test at pH 5.5. Zeta potential measurements show that all studied polymers are able to neutralize the anionic charge of DNA at polymer/DNA weight ratio in the range of …
Positive Allosteric Control of Guests Encapsulation by Metal Binding to Covalent Porphyrin Cages
2018
The allosteric control of the receptor properties of two flexible covalent cages is reported. These receptors consist of two zinc(II) porphyrins connected by four linkers of two different sizes, each incorporating two 1,2,3‐triazolyl ligands. Silver(I) ions act as effectors, responsible for an on/off encapsulation mechanism of neutral guest molecules. Binding silver(I) ions to the triazoles opens the cages and triggers the coordination of pyrazine or the encapsulation of N,N′‐dibutyl‐1,4,5,8‐naphthalene diimide. The X‐ray structure of the silver(I)‐complexed receptor with short connectors is reported, revealing the hollow structure with a cavity well‐defined by two eclipsed porphyrins. Rath…
Self-assembled aggregates of amphiphilic perylene diimide-based semiconductor molecules: effect of morphology on conductivity.
2011
Abstract Two amphiphilic perylenetetracarboxylic diimide derivatives modified with different side chains at imide nitrogen, N- n -hexyl-N′-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,7-di(4′-t-butyl)phenoxy-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide ( PDI 1 ) and N,N′-di(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,7-di(4′-t-butyl)phenoxy-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide ( PDI 2 ), were fabricated into organic nanostructures via solution-phase self-assembly. Their self-assembling properties in methanol and n -hexane have been comparatively studied by electronic absorption, fluorescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The morphologies and structures of the self-assemblies were examined by scanning electronic micr…
The anion impact on the self-assembly of naphthalene diimide diimidazolium salts
2017
Naphthalene diimide diimidazolium salts differing in the anion nature were synthesized and their properties as well as their self-assembly behaviour were investigated. In particular, we took into consideration the N,N′-bis-(1-octyl-3-propylimidazolium)-naphthalene diimide cations and anions differing in size, shape and coordination abilities like [I−], [BF4−] and [NTf2−]. After determination of thermal behaviour, using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, the electrochemical stability and redox properties were assessed using cyclic voltammetry. The self-assembly behaviour of the salts was investigated using concentration and temperature-dependent spectroscopic…
New Biodegradable Hydrogels Based on Inulin and α,β-Polyaspartylhydrazide Designed for Colonic Drug Delivery: In Vitro Release of Glutathione and Oxy…
2010
Succinic derivatives of inulin (INU-SA) with two different degrees of derivatization (20% and 30%, mol/mol) were cross-linked with α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) to obtain INUPAHy hydrogels. Cross-linking was performed using N-ethyl-N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide (NHSS) as coupling agents and by varying the reaction time (4 h, 8 h and 24 h). All samples prepared were characterized by FT-IR analysis and swelling measurements in different media. In vitro assays, performed in the presence of inulinase, demonstrated the degradability of the prepared hydrogels. Cell compatibility was evaluated using Caco-2 cells through both direct and …
