Optimized Class-Separability in Hyperspectral Images

2016

International audience; Image visualization techniques are mostly based on three bands as RGB color composite channels for human eye to characterize the scene. This, however, is not effective in case of hyper-spectral images (HSI) because they contain dozens of informative spectral bands. To eliminate redundancy of spectral information among these bands, dimensionality reduction (DR) is applied while at the same trying to retain maximum information. In this paper, we propose a new method of information-preserved hyper-spectral satellite image visualization that is based on fusion of unsupervised band selection techniques and color matching function (CMF) stretching. The results show consist…

Application of entropic approach to estimate the mean flow velocity and Manning roughness coefficient in a high-curvature flume

2016

The entropy-based approach allows the estimation of the mean flow velocity in open channel flow by using the maximum flow velocity. The linear relationship between the mean velocity, umax, and the mean flow velocity, um, through the dimensionless parameter Φ(M), has been verified both in natural rivers and in laboratory channels. Recently, the authors of this study investigated the reliability of the entropy-based formula in a straight channel and under different bed and side-walls' roughness conditions. The present study aims to further validate the entropy-based approach and to explore the effectiveness of entropy-based formula in high curvature channels. Results show that as the effect o…

Statistical retrieval of atmospheric profiles with deep convolutional neural networks

2019

Abstract Infrared atmospheric sounders, such as IASI, provide an unprecedented source of information for atmosphere monitoring and weather forecasting. Sensors provide rich spectral information that allows retrieval of temperature and moisture profiles. From a statistical point of view, the challenge is immense: on the one hand, “underdetermination” is common place as regression needs to work on high dimensional input and output spaces; on the other hand, redundancy is present in all dimensions (spatial, spectral and temporal). On top of this, several noise sources are encountered in the data. In this paper, we present for the first time the use of convolutional neural networks for the retr…

Cloud detection on the Google Earth engine platform

2017

The vast amount of data acquired by current high resolution Earth observation satellites implies some technical challenges to be faced. Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform provides a framework for the development of algorithms and products built over this data in an easy and scalable manner. In this paper, we take advantage of the GEE platform capabilities to exploit the wealth of information in the temporal dimension by processing a long time series of satellite images. A cloud detection algorithm for Landsat-8, which uses previous images of the same location to detect clouds, is implemented and tested on the GEE platform.

SAR Image Classification Combining Structural and Statistical Methods

2011

The main objective of this paper is to develop a new technique of SAR image classification. This technique combines structural parameters, including the Sill, the slope, the fractal dimension and the range, with statistical methods in a supervised image classification. Thanks to the range parameter, we define the suitable size of the image window used in the proposed approach of supervised image classification. This approach is based on a new way of characterising different classes identified on the image. The first step consists in determining relevant area of interest. The second step consists in characterising each area identified, by a matrix. The last step consists in automating the pr…

Spectral alignment of multi-temporal cross-sensor images with automated kernel canonical correlation analysis

2015

In this paper we present an approach to perform relative spectral alignment between optical cross-sensor acquisitions. The proposed method aims at projecting the images from two different and possibly disjoint input spaces into a common latent space, in which standard change detection algorithms can be applied. The system relies on the regularized kernel canonical correlation analysis transformation (kCCA), which can accommodate nonlinear dependencies between pixels by means of kernel functions. To learn the projections, the method employs a subset of samples belonging to the unchanged areas or to uninteresting radiometric differences. Since the availability of ground truth information to p…

Testing a theoretical resistance law for overland flow on a stony hillslope

2020

Overland flow, sediments, and nutrients transported in runoff are important processes involved in soil erosion and water pollution. Modelling transport of sediments and chemicals requires accurate estimates of hydraulic resistance, which is one of the key variables characterizing runoff water depth and velocity. In this paper, a new theoretical power–velocity profile, originally deduced neglecting the impact effect of rainfall, was initially modified for taking into account the effect of rainfall intensity. Then a theoretical flow resistance law was obtained by integration of the new flow velocity distribution. This flow resistance law was tested using field measurements by Nearing for the …

Hyperspectral dimensionality reduction for biophysical variable statistical retrieval

2017

Abstract Current and upcoming airborne and spaceborne imaging spectrometers lead to vast hyperspectral data streams. This scenario calls for automated and optimized spectral dimensionality reduction techniques to enable fast and efficient hyperspectral data processing, such as inferring vegetation properties. In preparation of next generation biophysical variable retrieval methods applicable to hyperspectral data, we present the evaluation of 11 dimensionality reduction (DR) methods in combination with advanced machine learning regression algorithms (MLRAs) for statistical variable retrieval. Two unique hyperspectral datasets were analyzed on the predictive power of DR + MLRA methods to ret…

Laboratory evaluation of falling-head infiltration for saturated soil hydraulic conductivity determination

2020

Falling-head one-dimensional infiltration procedures, such as the simplified falling-head (SFH) technique, yield estimates of saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Ks, with parsimonious and rapid experiments. Factors that can influence determination of Ks by the SFH technique were tested in the laboratory on three repacked soils differing by particle diameter ranges (0-2000, 0- 105 and 105-2000 mm, respectively). Using the theoretically calculated depth of ponding on the infiltration surface, D, instead of the measured one had a small impact on the Ks calculations (means differing by a factor of 1.1-1.2, depending on the soil). For the finest soil, Ks decreased by 3.1 times as D increased …
