Varieties of algebras of polynomial growth
2008
Let V be a proper variety of associative algebras over a field F of characteristic zero. It is well-known that V can have polynomial or exponential growth and here we present some classification results of varieties of polynomial growth. In particular we classify all subvarieties of the varieties of almost polynomial growth, i.e., the subvarieties of var(G) and var(UT 2), where G is the Grassmann algebra and UT2 is the algebra of 2 x 2 upper triangular matrices.
Mechanisms of the Embedding of Extortion Racket Systems: The case of Cosa Nostra
2017
The chapter summarises some of the research undertaken in the EU project GLODERS which is directed towards investigating the dynamics of extortion racket systems (ERS) of which the Sicilian Mafia is but one example (http://www.gloders.eu/). Before describing in more detail the principal formal characteristics of the Mafia-type organizations and the ways in which the extortion racket system works in a certain territory it is necessary to briefly outline what is a mafia-type organization and what we mean when we talk about the extortion racket system. The chapter propose an analysis of the mechanisms of the process of extortion in Sicily.
Voice and Culture: A Prospect Theory Approach
2014
The present study examines the congruence of individuals' minimum preferred amounts of voice with the prospect theory value function across nine countries. Accounting for previously ignored minimum preferred amounts of voice and actual voice amounts integral to testing the steepness of gain and loss functions explicated in prospect theory, we use curve fitting to show that ratings of procedural justice fit prospect theory's value function specifically. Further, we investigate the form of this function across nine countries that range in power distance. Results suggest that the form of the value function is congruent with prospect theory, showing an S-shaped curve that is steeper in the loss…
Fizisko aktivitāšu nozīme Latvijas iedzīvotāju labklājības veicināšanā
2018
Dar…
Broken ray transform on a Riemann surface with a convex obstacle
2014
We consider the broken ray transform on Riemann surfaces in the presence of an obstacle, following earlier work of Mukhometov. If the surface has nonpositive curvature and the obstacle is strictly convex, we show that a function is determined by its integrals over broken geodesic rays that reflect on the boundary of the obstacle. Our proof is based on a Pestov identity with boundary terms, and it involves Jacobi fields on broken rays. We also discuss applications of the broken ray transform.
IndElec: A Software for Analyzing Party Systems and Electoral Systems
2011
IndElec is a software addressed to compute a wide range of indices from electoral data, which are intended to analyze both party systems and electoral systems in political studies. Further, IndElec can calculate such indices from electoral data at several levels of aggregation, even when the acronyms of some political parties change across districts. As the amount of information provided by IndElec may be considerable, this software also aids the user in the analysis of electoral data through three capabilities. First, IndElec automatically elaborates preliminary descriptive statistical reports of computed indices. Second, IndElec saves the computed information into text files in data matri…
Sustainable tourism: Measures, evidence and future prospects.
2021
The Chapter aims to provide a critical review of the quantitative approaches so far introduced in literature to measure the sustainable tourism. We focus on both variables and methods employed to obtain synthetic indicators of sustainable tourism and aim to provide some critical insights on potential new challenges caused by the current pandemic. For example, some dimensions of tourism sustainability may become more relevant in future due to the increasing attention by people on health and safety. Finally, a focus on the studies on measurement of sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean area will be provided.
Survey-based qualitative analysis of young generation perception of sustainable development in Poland
2020
Abstract Understanding the perception of Sustainable Development can help to identify misconceptions surrounding the concept in order to design better education plans and public policies on this subject. Evaluating the perception of sustainability issues by focusing on the young generation as is an important proxy to imagine what the future holds for in terms of addressing sustainable development. We conducted 177 in-person interviews on a heterogeneous group of students and random volunteers in four cities in Poland to assess their perception of Sustainable Development. The vast majority (89.3%) of the respondents were familiar with the term ‘Sustainable Development’. However, part of them…
Process and technology challenges in swift-starting virtual teams
2007
Originally published in the journal Information & Management : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/03787206 Virtual teams often face tight schedules and a need to start quickly and perform instantly. The goal of our study was to enhance understanding of the challenges faced by such teams. We used time–interaction–performance theory as the framework for following the processes and functions within virtual teams working on a systems development task. Our study provided a detailed examination of the group process, applied to virtual teams working under time pressure. The challenges faced by virtual teams in such settings showed that teams must work to enhance their effectiveness in mu…
