Rubidium dimers in paraffin-coated cells
2010
Measurements were made to determine the density of rubidium dimer vapor in paraffin-coated cells. The number density of dimers and atoms in similar paraffin-coated and uncoated cells was measured by optical spectroscopy. Due to the relatively low melting point of paraffin, a limited temperature range of 43-80 deg C was explored, with the lower end corresponding to a dimer density of less than 10^7 cm^(-3). With one-minute integration time, a sensitivity to dimer number density of better than 10^6 cm^(-3) was achieved. No significant difference in dimer density was observed between the cells.
Ultrafast excitation dynamics of low energy pigments in reconstituted peripheral light-harvesting complexes of photosystem I
2000
AbstractUltrafast dynamics of a reconstituted Lhca4 subunit from the peripheral LHCI-730 antenna of photosystem I of higher plants were probed by femtosecond absorption spectroscopy at 77 K. Intramonomeric energy transfer from chlorophyll (Chl) b to Chl a and energy equilibration between Chl a molecules observed on the subpicosecond time scale are largely similar to subpicosecond energy equilibration processes within LHCII monomers. However, a 5 ps equilibration process in Lhca4 involves unique low energy Chls in LHCI absorbing at 705 nm. These pigments localize the excitation both in the Lhca4 subunit and in LHCI-730 heterodimers. An additional 30–50 ps equilibration process involving red …
Dendritic cell-derived IL-12p40 homodimer contributes to susceptibility in cutaneous leishmaniasis in BALB/c mice
2007
Abstract Protection against Leishmania major in resistant C57BL/6 mice is mediated by Th1 cells, whereas susceptibility in BALB/c mice is the result of Th2 development. IL-12 release by L. major-infected dendritic cells (DC) is critically involved in differentiation of Th1 cells. Previously, we reported that strain differences in the production of DC-derived factors, e.g., IL-1αβ, are in part responsible for disparate disease outcome. In the present study, we analyzed the release of IL-12 from DC in more detail. Stimulated DC from C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice released comparable amounts of IL-12p40 and p70. In the absence of IL-4, BALB/c DC produced significantly more IL-12p40 than C57BL/6 DC. D…
Syntheses and properties of some exo,exo-bis(isodicyclopentadienyl)titanium low-valent complexes
2002
Abstract The paramagnetic compounds exo,exo-bis(η5-isodicyclopentadienyl)chlorotitanium(III) (3) and its analogue with trimethylsilyl-substituted isodicyclopentadienide (isodiCp) ligand (4), and the similar pair of diamagnetic exo,exo-bis(isodicyclopentadienyl)[η2-bis(trimethylsilyl)ethyne]titanium(II) complexes 5 and 6 were obtained by common reduction procedures from exo,exo-bis(isodicyclopentadienyl)titanium(IV) dichloride (1) and exo,exo-bis[η5-2-(trimethylsilyl)isodicyclopentadienyl]titanium(IV) dichloride (2), respectively. As indicated by ESR spectroscopy compound 3 is a dimer in the solid state and in frozen toluene glass but monomeric in toluene solution. Compound 4 is monomeric in…
Inhibitor-Induced Dimerization of an Essential Oxidoreductase from African Trypanosomes
2018
Trypanosomal and leishmanial infections claim tens of thousands of lives each year. The metabolism of these unicellular eukaryotic parasites differs from the human host and their enzymes thus constitute promising drug targets. Tryparedoxin (Tpx) from Trypanosoma brucei is the essential oxidoreductase in the parasite's hydroperoxide-clearance cascade. In vitro and in vivo functional assays show that a small, selective inhibitor efficiently inhibits Tpx. With X-ray crystallography, SAXS, analytical SEC, SEC-MALS, MD simulations, ITC, and NMR spectroscopy, we show how covalent binding of this monofunctional inhibitor leads to Tpx dimerization. Intra- and intermolecular inhibitor-inhibitor, pro…
Protective effect of trehalose-loaded liposomes against UVB-induced photodamage in human keratinocytes
2014
Trehalose, a naturally occurring non-reducing disaccharide, is known to act as a major protein stabilizer that can reduce ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced corneal damage when topically applied to the eye. However, due to the low skin permeability of trehalose, which makes the development of topical formulations difficult, its use as a skin photoprotective agent has been limited. Previous findings demonstrated that liposomes may significantly improve the intracellular delivery of trehalose. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the protective effects of trehalose-loaded liposomes against UVB-induced photodamage using the immortalized human keratinocyte cell line, HaCaT. The effects were al…
Unusual case of continuous urinary dribbling in a young female due to unknown complex urogenital malformation: magnetic resonance features
2020
Congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) occur in up to 3.2% of infants, and in almost one third of cases they are associated to genital aberrations. DMSA renal scintigraphy is considered the gold standard in CAKUT patients, to assess renal function, depict and locate ectopic kidney and to guide eventual surgical management. Recent cases have shown the noticeable limit of scintigraphy in detecting poorly functional renal moieties and associated genital anomalies; thus leading to a substantial delay in therapy, and, in females, to severe uro-gynecological complications. We herein describe a case of a young girl with unusual urinary dribbling, where DSMA scintigraphy was not d…
"Homo Sacer" figūra Nadīnes Gordimeras romānā "Pikaps" un Kiranas Desaji romānā "Mantotā nolemtība"
2020
Dotais maģistra darbs atspoguļo analītisku imigranta tēla lasījumu, kā Džordžo Agambena koncepcijas "homo sacer" iemiesojumu, mūsdienu postkoloniālajā literatūrā. Šajā darbā tika analizēti divi romāni: Nadīnes Gordimeras “Pikaps” (2001) un Kiranas Desaji “Mantotā nolemtība” (2007). Darbā tika pielietota Džordžo Agambena (1998) politiskā teorija. Pētījums tika veikts ar mērķi interpretēt "homo sacer" figūras attēlojumu izvēlētajos romānos, izmantojot salīdzinošo literāro pieeju. Romānu interpretatīvo lasījumu manāmi pastiprināja tādi postkoloniālo literāro studiju metožu veidi kā starpdisciplinaritāte un kontekstualitāte. Pētnieciskā darba rezultāti attēlo imigrantu tēlus, kas tiek reducēti …
On the photophysics and photochemistry of the water dimer
2012
The photochemistry of the water dimer irradiated by UV light is studied by means of the complete active space perturbation theory//complete active space self-consistent field (CASPT2//CASSCF) method and accurate computational approaches like as minimum energy paths. Both electronic structure computations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are carried out. The results obtained show small shifts relative to a single water molecule on the vertical excitation energies of the dimer due to the hydrogen bond placed between the water donor (W(D)) and the water acceptor (W(A)). A red-shift and a blue-shift are predicted for the W(D) and W(A), respectively, supporting previous theoretical a…
Accurate molecular geometries of the protonated water dimer
2000
The equilibrium geometry of the protonated water dimer, H5O2+, was studied using Moller–Plesset perturbation theory and coupled-cluster theory. Constrained geometry optimizations were carried out for the C2 and Cs symmetric structures within the counterpoise framework and near the limit of a complete basis set. In the constrained optimization, the degrees of freedom of the complex are reduced to an intrafragmental distortion and an interfragmental coordinate, making the procedure tractable for large basis sets and explicitly correlated linear r12 methods. The energy of the stationary point of C2 symmetry was found to be 1.2 kJ mol−1 below the energy of the Cs structure.
