Transcranial Doppler diagnosis of cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid haemorrhage: correlation and analysis of results in relation to the age o…

1994

A retrospective analysis was undertaken to determine whether cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) correlates with the age of patients. For at least 3 weeks after bleeding 80 subjects underwent very close follow-up with clinical examination and transcranial Doppler records of the blood velocities within the basal cerebral arteries. Firstly a correlation between measured maximal mean blood flow velocities and age was made. Secondly, according to their age and the maximum of recorded mean velocities (v), the patients were divided into groups as follows: age 55 years or less, age more than 55 years; and maximum velocity v190 cm/s, 90 cm/sv2120 cm/s, 120 cm/sv3160 cm/s, v4…

Control for carbon dioxide-related changes in flow velocity by transcranial Doppler monitoring.

1994

Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography can monitor changes in intracranial blood flow velocity over time in a variety of experimental and clinical settings with excellent temporal resolution. Alterations in arterial carbon dioxide pressure exert a profound influence on blood flow velocity. Such changes exhibit important individual fluctuation depending on respiratory status. This limits the ability of transcranial Doppler to accurately study subtle changes in blood flow velocity, independent of the respiratory state of the subject. Suggested here is a method to control for the respiration artifact on blood flow velocity. The middle cerebral artery of 7 healthy male volunteers was studied with…

EchoScopy in scanning abdominal diseases: initial clinical experience.

2014

Background and Aims: The introduction of a new type of small handheld ultrasound device brings greater portability and affordability. The basic ultrasound approach with these handheld devices has been defined by European Federation of Societies of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) as “EchoScopy”. The current study aimed to assess the image quality, indications and limitations of a portable pocket “EchoScope” compared with a high-end ultrasound system in abdominal diseases. Methods: 231 consecutive patients were included in this study. Physician A performed ultrasound examinations with a high-end ultrasound system (HEUS), then physician B performed the same ultrasound examination u…

Efficacy of single-source rapid kV-switching dual-energy CT for characterization of non-uric acid renal stones: a prospective ex vivo study using ant…

2019

Purpose To investigate the accuracy of rapid kV-switching single-source dual-energy computed tomography (rsDECT) for prediction of classes of non-uric-acid stones. Materials and methods Non-uric-acid renal stones retrieved via percutaneous nephrolithotomy were prospectively collected between January 2017 and February 2018 in a single institution. Only stones >= 5 mm and with pure composition (i.e., >= 80% composed of one component) were included. Stone composition was determined using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. The stones were scanned in 32-cm-wide anthropomorphic whole-body phantom using rsDECT. The effective atomic number (Zeff), the attenuation at 40 keV (HU40), 70 ke…

Mobilization of endothelial progenitor cells in acute cardiovascular events in the PROCELL study: Time-course after acute myocardial infarction and s…

2015

The mobilization pattern and functionality of endothelial progenitor cells after an acute ischemic event remain largely unknown. The aim of our study was to characterize and compare the short- and long-term mobilization of endothelial progenitor cells and circulating endothelial cells after acute myocardial infarction or atherothrombotic stroke, and to determine the relationship between these cell counts and plasma concentrations of vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM-1) and Von Willebrand factor (VWF) as surrogate markers of endothelial damage and inflammation. In addition, we assessed whether endothelial progenitor cells behave like functional endothelial cells. We included 150 patients…

Pentaerythrityl Tetranitrate and Nitroglycerin, but not Isosorbide Mononitrate, Prevent Endothelial Dysfunction Induced by Ischemia and Reperfusion

2007

Background— Short term exposure to nitroglycerin (GTN) has protective properties that are similar to ischemic preconditioning. Whether other organic nitrates such as pentaerithrityl tetranitrate (PETN) and isosorbide mononitrate (ISMN) have similar protective effects has not been explored. Methods and Results— In a randomized, parallel, double blind, controlled trial, 37 healthy young volunteers received no therapy (n=10), transdermal GTN 1.2 mg for 2 hours (n=9), PETN 80 mg (n=9), or ISMN 40 mg (n=9). Twenty-four hours later, endothelium-dependent flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) was measured before and after local exposure to ischemia and reperfusion (IR). In the no therapy group, IR blu…

Endothelium-independent contractions of human cerebral arteries in response to vasopressin.

1990

We studied the effects of vasopressin in isolated segments from branches (500-700 micrograms in external diameter) of human middle cerebral arteries obtained during autopsy of 15 patients who had died 3-8 hours before. Paired segments, one normal and the other de-endothelized by gentle rubbing, were mounted for isometric recording of tension in organ baths. In 11 normal segments, vasopressin produced concentration-dependent contractions with an EC50 of 7.0 X 10(-10) M. Removal of the endothelium from 12 segments did not significantly affect vasopressin-induced contractions. Vasopressin produced further contractions in arterial segments with (n = 4) or without (n = 5) endothelium precontract…

Endoscopic Procedures through the Foramen Interventriculare of Monro under Stereotactical Conditions

1994

The foramen interventriculare of Monro is an anatomical narrowness for the endoscopic access to the third ventricle. The effective mechanical angle to pass the foramen interventriculare from a frontal bore hole depends on the diameter in the plane of entrance, the depth of the foramen, and the diameter of the endoscope. Under the pathological conditions of a hydrocephalus internus the foramen interventriculare is enlarged. By means of stereotactical guidance, it is possible to reach the third ventricle accurately without damaging anatomical structures around the foramen interventriculare. The endoscopic technique under stereotactical guidance using a rigid endoscope is sufficient and safe t…

High Serum Cholesteryl Ester Transfer Rates and Small High-Density Lipoproteins Are Associated With Young Age in Patients With Acute Myocardial Infar…

2007

Objectives Our aim was to characterize cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) activity in the early phase of acute myocardial infarction (MI). Background Cholesteryl ester transfer protein catalyzes the transfer of cholesteryl esters from high-density lipoprotein (HDL) donors to apolipoprotein B-containing lipoprotein acceptors. Methods The CETP concentration, lipid profiles, and the rate of cholesteryl ester transfer (CET) from a tracer dose of radiolabeled HDL toward endogenous lipoproteins were determined within 24 h after symptom onset. Results Among 347 patients with first MI, CETP concentration, triglycerides, and non–HDL-cholesterol increased across tertiles of the CET rate, where…

Longitudinal analysis of endurance and respiratory function from a natural history study of Morquio A syndrome

2015

Objectives: Baseline data from the Morquio A Clinical Assessment Program (MorCAP) revealed that individuals with Morquio A syndrome show substantial impairment in multiple domains including endurance and respiratory function (Harmatz et al., Mol Genet Metab, 2013). Here, 1- and 2-year longitudinal endurance and respiratory function data are presented. Methods: Endurance was assessed using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and the 3-minute stair climb test (3MSCT). Respiratory function was evaluated by measuring forced vital capacity (PVC) and maximum voluntary ventilation (MW). Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANCOVA models. Annualized estimates of change were determined using model es…
