Ageing‐related changes in the cortical processing of otolith information in humans

2017

Acoustic short tone bursts (STB) trigger ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs/cVEMPs) by activating irregular otolith afferents. Simultaneously, STBs introduce an artificial net acceleration signal of otolith origin into the vestibular network. VEMP parameters as diagnostic otolith processing markers have been shown to decline after the age of thirty. To delineate the differential effects of healthy ageing on the cortical vestibular subnetwork processing otolith information, we measured cVEMPs and the differential effects of unilateral STB in three age groups (20-40, 40-60 and 60+; n = 42) using functional neuroimaging. STB evoked responses in the main vestibula…

Endothelium-dependent relaxation of human saphenous veins in response to vasopressin and desmopressin

1997

Purpose: The goal of this study was to determine the effects of vasopressin and the selective V 2 -receptor agonist desmopressin on human saphenous veins, with special emphasis on endothelium-mediated responses. Methods: Human saphenous vein segments were obtained from 35 patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery. Paired segments, one normal and the other deendothelized by gentle rubbing, were mounted for isometric recording of tension in organ baths. Concentration-response curves to vasopressin and desmopressin were determined in the presence and in the absence of either the V,-receptor antagonist d(CH 2 ) 5 Tyr(Me)AVP (10 −6 mol/L), the V 1 -V 2 receptor antagonist desGly-d(CH 2 ) 5 D-T…

Usefulness of combining clinical and radiological dental findings for a more accurate noninvasive age estimation.

2007

: The aim of this study was to establish correlations of clinical and radiological dental findings, alone or in combination, with chronological age in adults. Dental findings and orthopantomograms of 984 patients (aged 20–60 years; 524 females/460 males) were analyzed. DMF-T index and distance (alveolar bone level, ABL) between cemento-enamel junction and alveolar bone margin were recorded. Additionally, clinical and radiological findings at each tooth crown and root were collected according to the actual status of destruction and restoration, and a total score for each dentition (TSD) was calculated. After univariate correlation analysis, correlation coefficients for ABL and TSD were impro…

Validity of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in daily primary healthcare practice in France

2018

IF 1.194; International audience; ObjectiveThe objective of the study was to assess 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) validity in daily primary healthcare practice in France.Patients and methodsAn observational, longitudinal, prospective, multicenter study was performed in the Burgundy region, France. Participants were patients who had been prescribed ABPM by their general practitioner (GP), whatever its indication. ABPM was performed by employees of the healthcare providers group, which is publicly funded. The validity of ABPM was established according to the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) criteria. GPs interpretation of the ABPM results was collected and compared with…

Time course of human 40 Hz EEG activity accompanying P3 responses in an auditory oddball paradigm

1997

In order to quantify the time course of auditory P3-related gamma activity, root mean square (RMS) values were calculated from band-filtered (30-45 Hz) target and non-target responses in an auditory oddball experiment. Evoked (phase locked) gamma activity was evaluated from the time domain averages, whereas induced (not necessarily phase locked) activity was analyzed on the basis of single trials. Gamma RMS values were integrated across different time windows, namely the prestimulus, N50/P50, N100, pre P3, P3 and post P3 window. The single trial P3 window hereby was defined by a maximum amplitude criterion. In accordance with other studies, we found a pronounced increase of evoked gamma act…

Effect of transcranial direct current stimulation on semantic discrimination eyeblink conditioning

2015

Abstract Background Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulation method that has been used to modulate learning. We tested whether anodal tDCS targeted at the left DLPFC could enhance learning in a semantic variant of discrimination eyeblink conditioning, i.e., whether the stimulation would have a specific effect on the discrimination ability, rate of acquisition, amplitude of the conditioned response (CR), or all of these. Methods Immediately prior to the eyeblink conditioning, the participants received either active stimulation of 1 mA for 10 min or sham stimulation. The anode was placed over F3 and the cathode over the right supraorbital area. The conditioned stimu…

Biomechanical implications of excessive endograft protrusion into the aortic arch after thoracic endovascular repair

2015

Endografts placed in the aorta for thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) may determine malappositioning to the lesser curvature of the aortic wall, thus resulting in a devastating complication known as endograft collapse. This premature device failure commonly occurs in young individuals after TEVAR for traumatic aortic injuries as a result of applications outside the physical conditions for which the endograft was designed. In this study, an experimentally-calibrated fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model was developed to assess the hemodynamic and stress/strain distributions acting on the excessive protrusion extension (PE) of endografts deployed in four young patients underwent TE…

Combined aortic and mitral stenosis in mucopolysaccharidosis type I-S (Ullrich-Scheie syndrome)

1999

The genetic mucopolysaccharidosis syndromes (MPS) are autosomal recessive inborn errors of metabolism. Heart valve involvement in MPS is not uncommon but only a few case reports of successful cardiac surgery are available. In particular, reports of combined aortic and mitral stenosis associated with MPS type I-S are very rare. Both type I and type VI MPS are associated with significant left sided valvar heart disease that requires surgical valve replacement because of irregular valve thickening, fibrosis, and calcification. A 35 year old man had severe mitral valve stenosis after successful surgical replacement of a stenotic aortic valve. Valvar heart disease was investigated by cardiac ult…

Mitral and aortic regurgitation in 84 patients with mucopolysaccharidoses

1995

In echocardiographic and necropsy studies nodular thickening of the mitral valve and, less frequently, of the aortic valve has been found in 60%-90% of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). Little is known about the haemodynamic consequences of these morphological changes. In this study 84 unselected patients with different enzymatically proven MPS and 84 age and sex matched, healthy persons were studied prospectively by colour Doppler flow mapping. The patients' age ranged from 1 to 47 years (median 8.1 years). Mitral and aortic regurgitation were defined as a holosystolic or holodiastolic jet originating from the valve into the left atrium or the left ventricular outflow tract, respe…

RUPTURE OF A LEFT SINUS OF VALSALVA ANEURYSM INTO THE PULMONARY ARTERY.

2006

Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm is a rare congenital defect and the diagnosis is usually made after it ruptures. Very few cases of non-complicated sinus of Valsalva aneurysm have been published. The anomaly most often involves the right coronary sinus and less frequently the non-coronary sinus. A case with left sinus of Valsalva has not been reported. Since the aortic valve occupies a central position in the base of the heart, rupture of a sinus of Valsalva aneurysm can occur in any of the four heart chambers. Rupture into the pulmonary artery is very rare and is mostly associated with other congenital cardiopathies. ª 2005 The European Society of Cardiology. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All right…
