The author carries out a comparative analysis of Wacław Berents “Winter Crop” (Ozimina) and Thomas Manns “The Magic Mountain” (Der Zauberberg). Although the two compared novels are of different historical and cultural backgrounds, she shows things that they have in common. The analysis does not concentrate on the interrelations that were realised at the time but on tracking down the sources of the two writers’ imagination, intellectual fascinations, disturbing similarities (and obvious differences) that led to building up the world they created and also in the finesse of their language.
