Polychlorinated diphenyl ethers, dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and biphenyls in seals and sediment from the Gulf of Finland.

Polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs), 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were analyzed in seals from the Gulf of Finland and in sediments from the Gulf of Finland and near Gotland. The sediments included one surface core from both sampling sites. The seal material consisted of 14 ringed seals and 6 grey seals that all were found dead and examined for pathology. Assessing persistent organic pollutants (POPS) in the sicily island atmosphere, mediterranean, using PUF disk passive air samplers

In this study, PUF disk passive air samplers were deployed at eight sites, during two sampling periods, on the Island of Sicily in the Mediterranean basin. Samples were screened for a number of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (n = 28 congeners), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) (n = 16 compounds), and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs n = 28) using GC-MS. PCB concentrations in air ranged ~10-300 pg m-3. Remarkable Inertness of Copper(II) Chelates of Cyclen-Based Macrobicycles with Two trans-N-Acetate Arms

Two cross-bridged cyclen-based macrocycles with two trans-N-acetic acid arms, one having a dibenzofuran (DBF) moiety as the bridge, H2L1, and the other a diphenyl ether (DPE) one, H2L2, were synthesized. Both compounds behave as "proton sponges." The thermodynamic stability constants for the Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Al(3+), and Ga(3+) complexes of both compounds were determined. They exhibit an excellent thermodynamic selectivity for copper(II), ensuring that metal ions largely present in the human body do not interfere with the copper(II) chelates. Macrocyclic oligoureas with xanthene and diphenyl ether units

Two cyclic oligoureas with 64- and 80-membered rings in which two sets of three or four rigid xanthene (X) units are connected via flexible diphenyl ether (D) units were synthesized by a stepwise fragment condensation. The compounds were characterized by (1)H NMR and ESI mass spectrometry. The structure of the cyclic octamer (XXXDXXXD) was additionally confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. The molecule assumes a strongly folded conformation with distorted C(2)-symmetry, stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. In order to evaluate the contamination status of terrestrial biota in Latvia, muscle and liver tissues of red deer (Cervus elaphus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and moose (Alces alces) were analyzed for the content of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), as well as cadmium and lead.
