Language acquired great importance in ancient diplomacy. The success or failure of a diplomatic mission depended greatly upon the ambassador’s skills of persuasion, a product of the efficacy of his words and their suitability to his audience. The ambassador had to be able to choose the most appropriate words to reach the objectives of his mission. The measure of his competence was his capacity to recognize the position of his listener, without undervaluing ideas, preconceptions, and potential reactions. Nei discorsi riportati da Tito Livio riguardanti gli scambi diplomatici succedutisi nel corso della seconda guerra punica, il concetto di ius che regola le relazioni fra forze in gioco è ampiamente utilizzato come motivo argomentativo; l’obiettivo dello storico è quello di difendere i comandanti romani, nei casi in cui ne era messa in dubbio la correttezza da un’opinione pubblica avversa, e strumentalmente manipolata a livello interno dagli avversari politici. In particolare l'analisi è rivolta all’impiego di un lessico che rinvia alla sfera del ius e del mos, nelle sue diverse declinazioni, quale strumento di riflessione sull'imperialismo romano.

In this work, the role of the Sicily in the field ofthe diplomatic relationships inside Mediterranean area from fifth to fourth century b.C. was examined. Diodoro Siculo hystorian has been the preferred reference, and in particular, his XI-XIII books of the Hystoric Library were the source of the most important and, in some cases exclusive, information about Sicily hidtory from 480 to Dionisio I tyranny. The essay investigates the marriage diplomacy of Chiaromonte family by a detailed analysis of their ties with Ventimiglia and Palizzi, in the context of their relations with the kings of Sicily, the Angevins, the Aragonese, and the papacy. We deduce that the marriage strategies of comital families influenced the island’s politics. The genealogical construction rooted families in the past, so preserving the good reputation of the ancestors was essential. A fair number of sons, able to pass on the family surname and to maintain comital feuds, ensured dynastic continuity and projected towards the future. The coronation parliament in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was always an exceptional event not only for the newly elected monarch but also for diplomats from foreign courts who reported about its proceedings. In their reports, they tried to provide as much information as possible, not only political but also moral, social, and related to the ceremony. Of course, such material needs careful analysis, as the diplomats, othen unfamiliar with the reality of the Polish-Lithuanian state, misrepresented the facts or presented them in a wrong context. The construction of certain country images and identities is traditionally studied in relation to public diplomacy, strategic communication and nation branding practices of state and non-state actors. However, we notice the increased instrumentalization of country images and identities in debates on issues beyond strategic promotional practices, such as those articulated around elections, referendums or migration.
