Definition and Holders of Key Functions

This chapter takes up the four key functions established in the Solvency II Directive. In this vein, the significance of the key functions is highlighted first. Then follows the analysis of the terms “key function” and “key function holders”, terms undefined in the Solvency II Directive. The next step points out the distinctions among key function holders and their subordinate staff members. A part of this breakdown is to examine in practice who exercises which function in an insurance undertaking. The chapter wraps up by looking at whether key functions are performed in a centralized or decentralized organization.

Supervisory Review Process

This chapter addresses the legal outlining of the supervisory review process. There is an apparent contradiction between principles-based insurance supervision on the one hand and, on the other hand, legal certainty along with foreseeability of supervisory action under art. 36 of the Solvency II Directive. With this in view, the chapter next examines the objectives and subject matter of the supervisory review process, with particular scrutiny given to requirements relating to solvency and governance. The powers of supervisory authorities to remedy weaknesses and deficiencies are then taken up.

Abstract Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μSPE) has gained special attention in the sample preparation process due to its simplicity, speed and efficiency. Different dispersion approaches have been used within this technique to allow a close contact between the sorbent and the donor sample solution during the entrapping step, but also between the sorbent and the solvent in the elution step. This dispersion favors the kinetics of both sorption and elution and therefore increases the efficiency of the overall extraction procedure. In a recent paper [P. Rizzo, G. Bordoni, A. Marzani, and J. Vipperman, "Localization of Sound Sources by Means of Unidirectional Microphones, Meas. Sci. Foreign Direct Investment, Terms of Trade, and Quality Upgrading: What Is So Special about South Asia?

The existing literature has highlighted the positive effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on export upgrading and associated terms of trade in developing economies. However, the FDI effect has been found to be negative in South Asia. In this paper, we elaborate on the South Asia-specific effect by emphasizing the role of human capital in the positive link between FDI and terms of trade. We argue that education levels in South Asia have lagged behind those in East Asia and other developing regions. The embodied sources of purpose expressions in Latin

This chapter examines the phrasal means of encoding the semantic role of purpose in Latin. After discussing the notion of semantic role and its use in cognitive linguistics, we illustrate the conceptual relation between the notional domains of space and causation. On this basis, we analyze the source of purpose expressions in Latin, which are mainly based on direction (bare dative and the allative markers, i.e. ad / in + accusative), but also include prepositional phrases metaphorically derived from location (e.g. per + accusative, prō + ablative, propter + accusative), or metonymically spreading from reason to purpose (as in the case of causal markers such as genitive + causā and gratiā ).

A directional spectral mixture analysis method: application to multiangular airborne measurements

This study aims at developing an operational approach-namely, directional spectral mixture analysis (DISMA)-for retrieving vegetation parameters like fractional vegetation cover (FVC) and leaf area index (LAI) from multispectral and multiangular data. The approach attempts to highlight the consistency of one-dimensional models and linear mixture approaches. Levansucrases of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Lsc3) and Pseudomonas chlororaphis subsp. aurantiaca (also Pseudomonas aurantiaca) (LscA) have 73% identity of protein sequences, similar substrate specificity and kinetic properties. Both enzymes produce levan and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) of varied length from sucrose, raffinose and sugar beet molasses. Nondestructive Direct Determination of Heroin in Seized Illicit Street Drugs by Diffuse Reflectance near-Infrared Spectroscopy

A new method has been developed for the fast and nondestructive direct determination of heroin in seized street illicit drugs using partial least-squares regression analysis of diffuse reflectance near-infrared spectra. Data were obtained from untreated samples placed in standard glass chromatography vials. A heterogeneous population of 31 samples, previously analyzed by a reference method, was employed to build the calibration model and to have a separated validation set.
