Is money where the fun ends? Material interests and individuals’ preference for direct democracy
2020
Abstract Are people’s attitudes towards referendums as a decision-making procedure predominantly driven by their material self-interest, or do individuals also value direct democracy as such, regardless of the material payoffs associated with anticipated policy outcomes? To answer this question, we use a survey data set that offers information on respondents’ support for referendums as a procedure to decide on tax policy, their income levels, socio-economic characteristics, and, most importantly, their expectation about the majority’s support for higher taxes. We find that the support of low-income individuals for referendums increases substantially if they expect a clear population majorit…
TV-theatre: TV Presence in Contemporary Theatre for Children and Young Audiences in Buenos Aires
2009
In Argentina, television shows have created their own theatrical shows, which run for the winter holidays, using the same stories, same characters, and same actors but onstage. Many artists who devote themselves all year long to theatre for children see those “TV-theatre” shows as unfair competition, arguing that such huge productions lack actual artistry and cultural value. This paper aims to examine the characteristics of the TV-theatre, including how much theatre and how much TV languages, codes, and messages it contains, using Pavis´s concept of “intermediality.” If one of theatre for children's greatest goals or outcomes is to create future audiences/theatregoers, and to impart in them…
Corporate income tax accounting in Spain: an empirical study
2012
Since the initial application in Spain of the tax effect accounting method based on the international accounting standards (IAS 12 income tax) in 1990, very few empirical studies have examined whether this method provides significant information for decision making. The paper analyses the fiscal information provided in the financial statements, evaluating the significance of the differences between the tax effect accounting method and the taxes payable method and establishing that this one might be acceptable in small companies.
Simulation investigations of the position of Fatigue Fracture Plane in materials with biaxial loads
1989
In the paper three methods of determination of the expected fatigue fracture plane position under random triaxial stress state have been presented. They are: weight function method, variance method and damage cumulation method. The weight function method for biaxial cyclic loadings has been analysed with digital simulation. The fatigue fracture plane position has been determined with mean values of the direction cosines of principal stress axes. Averaging has been done at angle values with use of weights. Eleven various weights have been presented and their usability has been analysed on the basis of experimental results obtained by Rotvel, and Nishihara-Kawamoto. The weights with good agre…
Detection of anti-myeloperoxidase antibodies in the serum of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
1996
Anti-myeloperoxidase (anti-MPO) antibodies were detected in 34 of 88 (38%) patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus but in only 3 of 55 (5.7%) healthy subjects and in 4 of 20 patients with autoimmune disease. Specificity of anti-MPO antibodies was assessed by MPO inhibition studies. No relationship was found between the occurrence of anti-MPO and anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies. Levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) were found to be higher in anti-MPO antibody-positive (n = 28, 508 +/- 126 ng/ml) than in anti-MPO antibody-negative (n = 58, 438 +/- 140 ng/ml: P < 0.05) patients. A state of chronic neutrophil activation has been described in diabetes mellitus. As anti-MPO…
The Veblen-Gerschenkron Effect of FDI in Mezzogiorno and East Germany
2003
The presence of foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs) can benefit local economies. In particular, if MNEs are very productive compared to domestic firms, they may promote learning and catch-up of local firms. Such a channel of spillovers from MNEs to local firms is known as the Veblen-Geschenkron effect. Rather than the overall density of MNEs in a region or sector, it is their initial productivity advantage on the local firm to determine the positive effect on domestic productivity growth. We test this hypothesis using firm level data for German and Italian companies during the 90's and we find evidence of a significant and robust Veblen-Gerschenkron effect.
A method of desingularization for analytic two-dimensional vector field families
1991
It is well known that isolated singularities of two dimensional analytic vector fields can be desingularized: after a finite number of blowing up operations we obtain a vector field that exhibits only elementary singularities. In the present paper we introduce a similar method to simplify the periodic limit sets of analytic families of vector fields. Although the method is applied here only to reduce to families in which the zero set has codimension at least two, we conjecture that it can be used in general. This is related to the famouss Hibert's problem about planar vector fields.
Control Strategy for Induction Motor Drives Based on Decoupling Techniques
1989
Abstract In this work a new closed loop, synchronous microprocessor-based controller is proposed for field oriented controlled induction motor drives, using a PWM voltage source inverter. This controller is based on a non linear state feedback compensator which gives decoupling of both rotor current and rotor flux, and direct and inquadrature components of the stator current vector. The compensator has a linearizing effect on the synchronous model of the electromagnetic circuit of the motor. It follows that the control laws can be obtained using optimal control techniques for linear systems. The controller in question gives directly the conduction sequences of the inverter supplying the ind…
Robust, direct torque control of induction motor drives in application to industrial manipulator
2002
The paper analyses the application of three-phase small induction motors as the drives for industrial manipulator joints and their control related problems. By introducing a robust control to the whole systems in which the direct torque control is applied to driving motors, the solution presented is not only realistic but also yields high quality of trajectory tracking. The problem is widely illustrated by simulated results of manipulator's operation with that kind of drives including several control system options.
Ārvalstu tiešo investīciju un to ietekmējošo faktoru analīze Latvijā
2016
Ekonomiskās attīstības būtisks priekšnosacījums ir investīcijas, ilgtermiņā īpaši ārvalstu tiešās investīcijas. Maģistra darba mērķis ir, balstoties uz ārvalstu tiešo investīciju un to ietekmējošo faktoru analīzi, izstrādāt priekšlikumus ārvalstu tiešo investīciju piesaistei Latvijas ekonomikā. Maģistra darba pētījumā, pamatojoties uz teorētisko aspektu izpēti, ārvalstu tiešo investīciju analīzi dažādos griezumos, vektoru autoregresijas un vektoru kļūdu korekcijas modeļu rezultātiem, izmantojot ceturkšņa datus no 2000. līdz 2015.gadam, secināts, ka īstermiņā un ilgtermiņā uzkrātās ārvalstu tiešās investīcijas Latvijā pārliecinoši pozitīvi ietekmē iekšzemes kopprodukts un eksports, to apstip…
