We tested the hypothesis that the M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtype mediates cholinergic responses in murine ophthalmic arteries after endothelial removal.Muscarinic receptor gene expression was determined in ophthalmic arteries with intact and with removed endothelium using real-time PCR. The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease where the presence of high titers of circulating autoantibodies causes thrombosis with consecutive infarcts. In experimental APS (eAPS), a mouse model of APS, behavioral abnormalities develop in the absence of vessel occlusion or infarcts. Intra-operative locally injected pharmacotherapy as a novel strategy for adhesion prophylaxis.

Abstract Background Pharmacotherapy for peritoneal adhesion prophylaxis has been a focus for intensive research. Previous strategies included intravenous and intraperitoneal application of suitable pharmaceutical agents. However, success of these strategies in humans has been limited. An experimental study on magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis in piglets.

Abstract Introduction Fashioning a patent, watertight anastomosis in patients with esophageal atresia is a challenging task in pediatric surgery, particularly when performed under tension. A reproducible suture-less alternative would decrease operative time. We evaluated magnetic esophageal compression anastomoses in a novel bypass-loop swine model. Neurodegenerative changes are prevented by Erythropoietin in the pmn model of motoneuron degeneration

Motoneuron diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders characterized by a progressive loss of motoneurons, muscle weakness and premature death. The progressive motor neuronopathy (pmn) mutant mouse has been considered a good model for the autosomal recessive childhood form of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Here, we investigated the therapeutic potential of Erythropoietin (Epo) on this mutant mouse. Symptomatic or pre-symptomatic treatment with Epo significantly prolongs lifespan by 84.6% or 87.2% respectively. Aims: To analyse myelination and outgrowth of the optic axons in relation to the neuro-ophthalmological manifestations of ethanol (EtOH) abuse during pregnancy. In vivo imaging of colitis and colon cancer development in mice using high resolution chromoendoscopy

Background: Mouse models of colitis and cancer are indispensable for our understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases. In the past, mice had to be sacrificed in order to analyse colitis activity and tumour development. We have developed a safe method for high resolution endoscopic monitoring of living mice. Long-Term Evaluation of a Rat Model of Chronic Cholangitis Resembling Human Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic disorder with a presumed autoimmune aetiopathogenesis. We have recently described a novel organ-specific rat model of fibrosing cholangitis induced by intrabiliary administration of the hapten-reagent 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) with similarities to human PSC. In the present report, we have evaluated the long-term outcome of TNBS-induced cholangitis in this model.
