Gap solitons in nonlinear electrical transmission lines

2005

We study theoretically and numerically the properties of monochromatic waves in a nonlinear electrical transmission line, whose capacitance has a periodic spatial variation.ln the continuum limit and weak amplitude limit we reduce the characteristic equations of this system to NLS equation. We find analytical solutions for the voltage envelope, which propagate with frequency in the gap induced by the capacitance periodicity. Our numerical experiments show that, when the input voltage increases, the transmissivity in the gap increases and the voltage envelope approaches the stationnary shape predicted by theory.

Source linewidth effects in temporal imaging of Gaussian Schell-model pulses

2006

A transform-limited Gaussian pulse generated from an externally modulated stationary source is launched within a temporal imaging system composed of a second-order dispersion followed by a time lens and a subsequent quadratic dispersion. We consider the effect of the statistical properties of the emitted light for temporal imaging. In particular, it is shown that the design parameters that ensure a received signal with the minimum root-mean-square (rms) width achievable, which is called the temporal image of the incident pulse, are strongly dependent on the coherence properties of the input waveform. Finally, limitations on the temporal resolution of the setup are highlighted and a realisti…

Group interactions of dissipative solitons in a laser cavity: the case of 2+1.

2009

What can be the outcome of the interaction between a dissipative soliton pair and a soliton singlet? We report an experimental observation of ???elastic??? collisions as well as ???inelastic??? formation of triplet soliton states in a fiber laser setup. These observations are supported with the numerical simulations based on the dispersion (parameter) managed cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation model.

Temporal self-imaging effect for chirped laser pulse sequences: Repetition rate and duty cycle tunability

2005

We express parabolic-dispersion-induced transformations of a linearly chirped signal in terms of those suffered by the unchirped version of the same input signal. Specifically, we unveil that any amount of chirping and dispersion produces, aside from a scale factor, the same pulse-distortion effect as a certain parabolic dispersion in the unchirped input. This relevant result allows us to derive, as a particular case, the dispersion condition that leads to the temporal self-imaging phenomenon for laser pulse sequences globally affected by a quadratic-phase modulation. This combined action of chirping and dispersion is proposed as a technique for generating laser pulse sequences with customi…

Modulation instability scenario in negative index materials

2010

We present an investigation of the critical frequency windows permitting modulation instability in negative index materials. The principal motivation for our analysis stems from the impact of the inevitable presence of the effective dispersive magnetic permeability in addition to the effective dielectric permittivity determining the propagation model for ultrashort pulses in negative index materials. We emphasize the influence of nonlinear dispersion terms, arising out of the combinatorial effect of the dispersive permeability with the nonlinear polarization, over the MI phenomena, the outcome of its development achieved by using linear stability analysis. Gain spectrum investigation has be…

Tunable arrayed waveguide grating driven by surface acoustic waves

2016

We present a design approach for compact reconfigurable phased-array wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) devices with N access waveguides (WGs) based on multimode interference (MMI) couplers. The proposed devices comprise two MMI couplers which are employed as power splitters and combiners, respectively, linked by an array of N single-mode WGs. First, passive devices are explored. Taking advantage of the transfer phases between the access ports of the MMI couplers, we derive very simple phase relations between the arms that provide wavelength dispersion at the output plane of the devices. When the effective refractive index of the WGs is modulated with the proper relative optical phase d…

Angular spectrum of diffracted wave fields with apochromatic correction.

2008

We report on compensation of diffraction-induced angular dispersion of ultrashort pulses up to a second order. A strategy for chromatic correction profits from high dispersion of kinoform-type zone plates. Ultraflat dispersion curves rely on a saddle point that may be tuned at a prescribed wavelength. Validity of our approach may reach the few-cycles regime.

Soliton pairs in a fiber laser: From anomalous to normal average dispersion regime

2003

We report the observation of self phase-locked pulse pairs in a stretched-pulse fiber laser operating in the normal path-averaged dispersion regime. Numerical simulations agree with our experimental results. More insight is provided with a numerical comparison between intracavity profiles of pulse pairs in anomalous and in normal dispersion regimes. © 2003 Optical Society of America.

Elastic constants in RbI, determined by inelastic neutron scattering

1978

Long-wavelength acoustic phonons have been studied in the whole (100)-plane of RbI at 295 K by means of inelastic neutron scattering. The raw data have been corrected for resolution effects taking into account the curvature of the dispersion surface and variations of the mode eigenvectors. The shifts of the neutron groups due to these resolution effects are discussed in detail. The analysis of the experimental results gives for the zero sound elastic constantsc11=28.15±0.5,c12=3.7±0.5 andc44=2.85±0.1 1010 dyn/cm2. A comparison with first sound elastic constants taken from ultrasonic measurements yields significant differences between the high and low frequency elastic constantsc11 andc″=(c1…

Collision-induced polarization scattering of dispersion managed solitons

2005

Using a multiscale expansion of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations we study the role of map strength and channel spacing for two colliding solitons. We numerically study then the depolarization caused by collisions of dispersion-managed vector solitons.
