The structure of reactive grain-boundaries under stress containing confined fluids

We present numerical experiments on structure development in grain-boundaries during dissolution–precipitation creep. Two solids that are represented by an elastic spring configuration are pressed together with a compressible fluid in the grain-boundary. The solid can dissolve or precipitate depending on elastic and surface energy as well as fluid pressure and concentration of dissolved material in the fluid. Heterogeneous Displacement Effects of Migrant Labor Supply – Quasi-Experimental Evidence From Germany

We provide estimates of the effect of migrant labor supply on resident employment. We exploit variation in the number of asylum seekers eligible to the suspension of a major hiring restriction implemented in a subset of German counties. Our difference-in-difference design allows us to provide evidence from a labor supply shock of migrants on local markets net of their additional spending at arrival that might mask labor market displacement effects. Despite this, we do not find a negative effect on employment growth of natives but only on other foreign residents. This also holds for unskilled employees. Mechanical desorption of a single chain: unusual aspects of phase coexistence at a first-order transition.

The phase transition occurring when a single polymer chain adsorbed at a planar solid surface is mechanically desorbed is analyzed in two statistical ensembles. In the force ensemble, a constant force applied to the nongrafted end of the chain (that is grafted at its other end) is used as a given external control variable. In the $z$-ensemble, the displacement $z$ of this nongrafted end from the surface is taken as the externally controlled variable. Interspecific aggression and character displacement in the damselfly Calopteryx splendens

Problems in species recognition are thought to affect the evolution of secondary sexual characters mainly through avoidance of maladaptive hybridization. Another, but much less studied avenue for the evolution of sexual characters due to species recognition problems is through interspecific aggression. In the damselfly, Calopteryx splendens, males have pigmented wing spots as a sexual character. Large-spotted males resemble males of another species, Calopteryx virgo, causing potential problems in species recognition. Maintenance of male reaction to the congeneric song in the Hippolais warbler hybrid zone

Both hybridization and competition may induce character shift on communication systems in hybrid zones, leading either to convergence or divergence. Melodious warblers Hippolais polyglotta and Icterine warblers H. icterina are interspecifically territorial and hybridize along a narrow contact zone. This spatial distribution is favoured by a reaction to the congeneric song. Active faults and inferred seismic sources in the San Vito lo Capo peninsula, Northwestern Sicily, Italy.

Two independent active faults, capable of generating medium-sized earthquakes in the San Vito lo Capo peninsula, northwestern Sicily (Italy) have been identified as a result of detailed field studies. In western Sicily, instrumental seismicity is low; in fact, except for the 1968 Belice earthquake (Ms = 5.4), historical records indicate that this area is relatively quiescent. Most of the seismicity is in the offshore sector of the Sicilian Maghrebian Chain, which is characterized by several medium- to low-magnitude events. The main shock of the 2002 Palermo seismic sequence (Mw = 5.9) represents the largest earthquake felt in the area in recent years. The deformation pattern characterizing …

The mechanical properties of the AT afford efficient movement, power amplification and power attenuation during locomotor tasks. Effects of network pressure on water meter under-registration: an experimental analysis

Abstract. In water supply systems, a considerable amount of apparent loss is caused by meter under-registration. Water meters are subject to intrinsic systemic error depending on the actual flow rates passing through them.
