Transformation Algorithm of Dielectric Response in Time-Frequency Domain

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/547105 A transformation algorithm of dielectric response from time domain to frequency domain is presented. In order to shorten measuring time of low or ultralow frequency dielectric response characteristics, the transformation algorithm is used in this paper to transform the time domain relaxation current to frequency domain current for calculating the low frequency dielectric dissipation factor. In addition, it is shown from comparing the calculation results with actual test data that there is a coincidence for both results over a wide …

Multiwall carbon-nanotube interconnects: radial effects on physical models and resistance calculations for various metal substrates

2010

Based on a model with singular attractive potential of equidistant conductive cylinders, we illustrate an approach to calculate the electron spectrum of metallic multiwall carbon nanotubes (MW CNT) with an arbitrary number of coaxial layers. We compute the number of electrically active channels, N ch , in the ideal case when all MW CNT shells are contacted to the electrodes, starting from the one-electron spectrum. The dependence of N ch on the temperature and on both the innermost and outermost shells radii allows us to discuss the potential performances of MW CNT interconnects, affecting the power dissipation of integrated circuits. Our description improves over the isolated shells model,…

Mixed Mode Delamination Analysis by a Thermodynamically Consistent Cohesive Interface Model with Independent Mode I and Mode II Fracture Energies

2015

Abstract In the present paper a new thermodynamically consistent cohesive interface model is proposed; it based on a predefined Helmhotz free energy with a single scalar damage variable and produces two independent fracture energies, in pure mode I and pure mode II debonding conditions. The proposed model can also take in to account the frictional effects with a smooth transition of the mechanical behaviour, from the initial cohesive one of the sound material, to the frictional one of the fully debonded interface. The cohesive-frictional behaviour is based on the mesoscale geometric interpretation of the scalar damage variable, which distinguish sound and debonded fractions of a representat…

Thermodynamic control over energy dissipation modes in dual-network hydrogels based on metal-ligand coordination.

2020

Modern polymeric hydrogels use reversible bonds to mimic biological functionalities. However, true biological materials benefit from several supramolecular elements and deliver multiple functions at the same time. To approach similar creation and control of multiple different functional elements in a synthetic soft material, we develop a model dual-network hydrogel in which multiple energy dissipating modes are formed by metal–ligand coordination and regulated by their association thermodynamics. This idea is realized by using linear and tetra-arm poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) precursors with complementary reactive end groups. The former also carries terpyridine ligands on both ends, which fo…

Characteristics of mechanical metamaterials based on buckling elements

2017

Metamaterials are composed of structural elements and derive their properties mainly from the inner structure of the elements, rather than the properties of their constituent material. By designing an unstable structural element as the building block of a metamaterial, many interesting effective material properties can be obtained. The deformation and dissipation mechanisms of such a material built from unstable structural elements is studied in detail. To do so a combination of analytical, semi-analytical, and numerical models are applied to a single buckling element, a periodic cell, and finite size combinations of buckling elements including gradients in the properties of the building bl…

Dynamical behaviour of pneumatic artificial muscles

2014

The mechanical response of pneumatic artificial muscles is analyzed in transient and periodic conditions, assuming the inextensibility of the sheathing fibres and considering the influence of the texture geometry, of the dissipation due to the mutual sliding between the braids and of the stress field inside the bladder thickness, where the constituent elastomer is regarded as a two-parameter Mooney–Rivlin material. The polytropic exponent of the thermodynamic air evolution inside the muscle during the charging and discharging phases may be properly chosen depending on the working frequency. The muscle end shape is taken into account profiling the meridian section by a simple m-degree parabo…

First and second viscosity measurements in superfluid 3He-B

1996

By means of diaphragm-driven flow experiments in 3He-B in a thin slab geometry, we have measured the first and second viscosities, η and 3 at pressures of 0, 5, 10 and 29.3 bar. Our measurement of 3 has better established theoretical foundations than previous measurements and also extends to higher pressures. 3 and η were deduced from the frequency dependence of the flow dissipation determined from bandwidth measurements for several normal modes of the diaphragm; a first order slip correction was used in the determination of η. Near Tc, 3 α (1 - T/Tc)-1/2 in accordance with theoretical predictions but below T/Tc ~ 0.6 we observe a rapid drop in 3 signifying a departure from the hydrodynamic…

Energy of dendritic avalanches in thin-film superconductors

2018

A method for calculating stored magnetic energy in a thin superconducting film based on quantitative magneto-optical imaging is developed. Energy and magnetic moment are determined with these calculations for full hysteresis loops in a thin film of the superconductor NbN. Huge losses in energy are observed when dendritic avalanches occur. Magnetic energy, magnetic moment, sheet current and magnetic flux distributions, all extracted from the same calibrated magneto-optical images, are analyzed and discussed. Dissipated energy and the loss in moment when dendritic avalanches occur are related to each other. Calculating these losses for specific spatially-resolved flux avalanches is a great ad…

Microwave photoassisted dissipation and supercurrent of a phase-biased graphene-superconductor ring

2021

Irradiating normal-superconducting junctions with microwave photons produce spectacular effects, such as Shapiro steps and photoinduced modifications of the dc supercurrent. Moreover, microwave irradiation can also have other, hitherto unexplored consequences, such as a photoassisted dissipation which is phase dependent. Here we present a finite-frequency measurement of both the dissipation and the supercurrent of a phase-biased graphene-superconductor junction in response to microwave photons. We find that, while the supercurrent response is well described by existing theory, the dissipation exhibits unexpected effects which need new theoretical elucidation. Especially with high frequency …

A thermodynamics-based formulation of gradient-dependent plasticity

1998

Abstract A nonlocal thermodynamic theoretical framework is provided as a basis for a consistent formulation of gradient-dependent plasticity in which a scalar internal variable measuring the material isotropic hardening/softening state is the only nonlocal variable. The main concepts of this formulation are: i) the ‘regularization operator’, of differential nature, which governs the relation between the above nonlocal variable and a related local variable (scalar measure of plastic strain) and confers a unified character to the proposed formulation (this transforms into a formulation for nonlocal plasticity if the regularization operator has an integral nature); ii) the ‘nonlocality residua…
