Structural and functional evidence for the scaffolding effect of alveolar blood vessels

2017

A contribution of pulmonary blood distension to alveolar opening was first proposed more than 100 years ago. To investigate the contribution of blood distension to lung mechanics, we studied control mice (normal perfusion), mice after exsanguination (absent perfusion) and mice after varying degrees of parenchymal resection (supra-normal perfusion). On inflation, mean tracheal pressures were higher in the bloodless mouse (4.0α2.5 cmH2O); however, there was minimal difference between conditions on deflation (0.7α0.9 cmH2O). To separate the peripheral and central mechanical effects of blood volume, multi-frequency lung impedance data was fitted to the constant-phase model. The presence or abse…

From Food Map to FODMAP in Irritable Bowel Sindrome.

2016

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases in the general population, with a prevalence ranging from 12 % to 30 %, mainly affecting younger patients (i.e., <50 years of age) and women [1]. As in other chronic functional gastrointestinal disorders, abdominal discomfort or pain, abnormal bowel habits, and often bloating and abdominal distension are the main clinical features. Their diagnosis is based on symptom patterns (i.e., the Rome III criteria), which also allow categorization in diarrhea-predominant (D-IBS), constipation-predominant (C-IBS), mixed diarrhea and constipation (M-IBS), and unclassified (U-IBS) IBS [2]. Symptom severity ranges from tol…

Role of FODMAPs in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

2015

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, flatus, and altered bowel habits. The role of dietary components in inducing IBS symptoms is difficult to explore. To date, foods are not considered a cause but rather symptom-triggering factors. Particular interest has been given to the so-called FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols). We aimed to summarize the evidence from the most common approaches to manage suspected food intolerance in IBS, with a particular interest in the role of FODMAPs and the effects of a low FODMAP diet. We reviewed literature, consulting PubMed and Medline by using the search terms FODMAP(s), fru…

Complications Through the Use of Viscoelastics

2000

Viscoelastic material retained behind the IOL may cause a capsular bag distension in the early postoperative period. These eyes accumulate a transparent substance in the closed chamber inside the capsular bag from the IOL blocking the capsular opening. The capsular bag distension was first discribed by Davison in 1990. Miyake et al. proposed a new classification of capsular block syndrome and supposed viscoelastic material to cause early-postoperative capsular block syndrome (Miyake et al., 1999). Capsular bag distension after optic capture of a sulcus-fixated IOL was described by Basti et al. (1999).

The effect of urine volume and nitric oxide on basal bladder blood flow: Response to catheterization and drainage

2000

Preliminary studies demonstrated that catheterization and drainage of the urinary bladder resulted in a significant increase in blood flow to the bladder. The objectives of this study were to determine 1) the relationship between urine volume and basal blood flow to the bladder smooth muscle and mucosa, 2) the effect of acute catheterization and drainage on bladder mucosal and smooth muscle blood flow, and 3) whether nitric oxide was involved in regulation of basal blood flow or the increase in blood flow observed after catheterization and bladder drainage. Twenty-four rabbits were separated into two groups: group 1 (14 rabbits) and group 2 (10 rabbits) treated with L-NAME (NOS inhibitor) 3…

Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome: What is the Meaning?

2011

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is a common cause of lower extremity pain. This is frequently attributed to trochanteric bursitis and distension of the subgluteal bursae. Patients are suffering from pain radiating to the posterolateral aspect of the thigh, paraesthesiae in the legs, and tenderness over the iliotibial tract. Often the symptoms are mild, with the patient treating himself successfully through activity modification and other conservative measures. including relative rest, ice, compression, elevation, anti-inflammatory medication and treatment modalities such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation, combined with a structured rehabilitation program. Patients whose sym…
