Inhibitory Activity and Chemical Characterization ofDaucus carotasubsp.maximusEssential Oils

The essential oils (EOs) of green seeds from Daucus carota subsp. maximus growing wild in Pantelleria Island (Sicily, Italy) were characterized. EOs were extracted by steam distillation, examined for their inhibitory properties against food-borne Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and analyzed for the chemical composition by gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS). Undiluted EOs showed a large inhibition spectrum against Gram-positive strains and also vs. Acinetobacter spp. and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The genus Clinopodium L. (Lamiaceae) is known for its medical uses in folk medicine and as a spice in Italian food. Recently, several taxa previously assigned to Satureja L. and Calamintha Mill. have been transferred to this genus (1). Pharmacological studies reveal, for instance, that Calamintha nepeta (L.) Essential oils composition of two Sicilian cultivars of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. (Cactaceae) fruits (prickly pear).

The essential oils composition of the skin, pulp and seeds from fruits of two Sicilian cultivars of Opuntia ficus-indica (cv. Sanguigna and cv. Surfarina) has been obtained by hydrodistillation and the possible antioxidant, antimicrobial and semiochemical roles have been investigated comparing the data with those reported in the literature. The presence of antioxidants and antimicrobials found in this study increases the spectrum of compounds that have beneficial properties in O. ficus-indica. Essential oil components of orange peels and antimicrobial activity

In this study, the orange peel of 12 cultivars of Citrus sinensis from central-eastern Sicily was employed to obtain essential oils and extracts. The ones were extracted through steam distillation, the others through extraction in hexane. Chemical constituents were evaluated in terms of qualitative and quantitative analyses by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Fifty-four components were identified in the steam essential oils and 44 in the extracts. In all the cultivars, the main component is d-limonene (73.9–97%); discrete percentages of linalool, geraniol and nerol were also found. PMRs Utilizing Non–Pressure-Driven Membrane Techniques

In the present chapter it is shown how photocatalytic membrane reactors utilizing membrane processes, which are not pressure driven, can exploit various mechanisms to obtain a substantial improvement of the process. The fundamentals of this particular type of membrane reactors are reviewed including the effects of the most important parameters and the methods and rules of coupling photocatalysis and membrane separation. CHARACTERIZATION OF HYDROPHOBIC POLYMERIC MEMBRANES FOR MEMBRANE DISTILLATION PROCESS

Hydrophobic microporous membranes are utilized in membrane distillation (MD) processes, e.g. seawater desalination at moderate temperatures. The vapour permeability of commercial hydrophobic membranes with different pore sizes (0.2-1 micron) was characterized through a simple apparatus designed-on-purpose. A cylindrical vessel had a face closed by the membrane and the other connected to a thin graduate tube. Turbulent heat transfer in spacer-filled channels: Experimental and computational study and selection of turbulence models

Abstract Heat transfer in spacer-filled channels of the kind used in Membrane Distillation was studied in the Reynolds number range 100–2000, encompassing both steady laminar and early-turbulent flow conditions. Experimental data, including distributions of the local heat transfer coefficient h, were obtained by Liquid Crystal Thermography and Digital Image Processing. Techno-economic analysis of integrated processes for the treatment and valorisation of neutral coal mine effluents

Abstract The disposal of highly-concentrated neutral coal mine effluents into the environment constitutes a severe threat to the natural ecosystem. This work proposes and compares five novel treatment chains to purify the effluent and recover raw materials. The chains present different combinations of pre-treatment and concentration technologies. In all cases, the solution sent to the concentration step is concentrated up to saturation to recover water and sodium chloride. CFD parametrical study of the spacer geometry for Membrane Distillation

Membrane Distillation (MD) is a thermal process that separates water from aqueous solutions containing non-volatile components such as salt. Water vapor from the hot feed channel permeates through a hydrophobic membrane thanks to a partial pressure gradient, and condenses in the cool channel.
