A comparison of two innovative customer power devices for Smart Micro-Grids

2015

The paper presents a comparison of two prototypes of innovative Customer Power Devices designed for applications in Smart Micro-Grids. The devices are both equipped with Energy Storage Systems, consisting in Lithium batteries and have been assembled, independently, by the DIAEE of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' and the DEIM of the University of Palermo in collaboration with the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA). In the paper, the characteristics and the operating modes of the devices are examined and some consideration on their application in Low Voltage Smart Micro-Grids are provided. © 2015 IEEE.

Development of Diagnostic Systems for the Fault Tolerant Operation of Micro-Grids

2010

The progressive penetration level of Distributed Generation (DG) is destined to cause deep changes in the existing distribution networks no longer considered as passive terminations of the whole electrical system. A possible solution is the realization of small networks, namely the Micro-Grids, reproducing in themselves the structure of the main production and distribution of the electrical energy system. In order to gain an adequate reliability level of the micro-grids the individuation and the management of the faults with the goal of maintaining the micro-grid operation (fault tolerant operation) is quite important. In the present paper after the introduction of the aims of several diagn…

Distributed Intrusion Detection for the Security of Industrial Cooperative Robotic Systems

2014

Abstract This paper addresses the problem of detecting possible intruders in a group of autonomous robots which coexist in a shared environment and interact with each other according to a set of common rules. We consider intruders as robots which misbehave, i.e. do not follow the rules, because of either spontaneous failures or malicious reprogramming. Our goal is to detect intruders by observing the congruence of their behavior with the social rules as applied to the current state of the overall system. Moreover, in accordance with the fully distributed nature of the problem, the detection itself must be performed by individual robots, based only on local information. We present a general …

Multi-objective strategies for management and design of distributed electric storage systems in a Mediterranean island

2013

The paper proposes an analytical study about the design and operation of distributed Electrical Storage Systems(ESS) in an active distribution network supplying a Mediterranean island, according to different criteria. The approach is based on the application of a multi-objective optimization algorithm (NSGA-II) that outputs a set of optimized schedules of the ESS in different configurations when operated according to different criteria (minimum energy losses in the grid, total generation cost, greenhouse gas emissions, limiting the fluctuations of the generation from fossil fuel plants). Moreover the variability of the voltage profile has been investigated also by a comparison with a refere…

Synchronization in Vehicle Routing—A Survey of VRPs with Multiple Synchronization Constraints

2012

This paper presents a survey of vehicle routing problems with multiple synchronization constraints. These problems exhibit, in addition to the usual task covering constraints, further synchronization requirements between the vehicles, concerning spatial, temporal, and load aspects. They constitute an emerging field in vehicle routing research and are becoming a “hot” topic. The contribution of the paper is threefold: (i) It presents a classification of different types of synchronization. (ii) It discusses the central issues related to the exact and heuristic solution of such problems. (iii) It comprehensively reviews pertinent literature with respect to applications as well as successful s…

A virtual testbed for analysis and design of sensorimotoric aspects of agent control

1997

Abstract In this paper XRaptor is introduced, an object-oriented simulation tool. It provides a virtual multi-agent world which acts as testbed for agent control mechanisms. This environment encompasses a 3-dimensional space, in which the agents may move. Currently agents are realized modelling some abstract properties of flies and bats. XRaptor provides different levels of information flow and world manipulation capabilities from the agents' point of view. A further purpose of XRaptor is educational: Different teams of developers may design control units for agents which can then be subjected to a tournament.

Global Understanding Environment

2009

Industry pushes a new type of Internet characterized as the Internet of Things, which represents a fusion of the physical and digital worlds. The technology of the Internet of Things opens new horizons for industrial automation, that is, automated monitoring, control, maintenance planning, and so forth, of industrial resources and processes. Internet of Things definitely needs explicit semantics, even more than the traditional Web—for automatic discovery and interoperability among heterogeneous devices and also to facilitate the behavioral coordination of the components of complex physical-digital systems. In this chapter, the authors describe their work towards the Global Understanding Env…

Optimal power flow based on glow worm-swarm optimization for three-phase islanded microgrids

2014

This paper presents an application of the Glowworm Swarm Optimization method (GSO) to solve the optimal power flow problem in three-phase islanded microgrids equipped with power electronics dc-ac inverter interfaced distributed generation units. In this system, the power injected by the distributed generation units and the droop control parameters are considered as variables to be adjusted by a superior level control. Two case studies with different optimized parameters have been carried out on a 6-bus test system. The obtained results showed the effectiveness of the proposed approach and overcomes the problem of OPF in islanded microgrids showing loads unbalance.

Unidirectional Direct Load Control through Smart Plugs

2014

International audience; Balancing energy demand and production is be-coming a more and more challenging task for energy utilities also because of the larger penetration of renewable energies which are more difficult to predict and control. While the traditional solution is to dynamically adapt energy production to follow time-varying demand, a new trend is to drive demand itself. Most of the ongoing actions in this direction involve greedy energy consumers, like industrial plants, supermarkets or large buildings. Pervasive communication technologies may allow in the near future to push further the granularity of such approach, by having the energy utility interacting with residen-tial appli…

A Perspective on the Future of Distribution: Smart Grids, State of the Art, Benefits and Research Plans

2013

Currently, the design and operation criteria for electrical distribution networks are fastly changing due to some factors; among these, the progressive penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) is destined to cause deep changes in the existing networks, no longer considered as passive terminations of the whole electrical system. Moreover, the increasing application of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) will allow the implementation of the so called “smart grids”, determining new interesting scenarios. In the paper the problems and the potential benefits of DG, the possible new electrical distribution system models and the major research projects on smart grids are faced and repor…
