Effect of Demand Side Management on the Operation of PV-Integrated Distribution Systems
2020
In this new era of high electrical energy dependency, electrical energy must be abundant and reliable, thus smart grids are conducted to deliver load demands. Hence, smart grids are implemented alongside distributed generation of renewable energies to increase the reliability and controllability of the grid, but, with the very volatile nature of the Distributed Generation (DG), Demand Side Management (DSM) helps monitor and control the load shape of the consumed power. The interaction of DSM with the grid provides a wide range of mutual benefits to the user, the utility and the market. DSM methodologies such as Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) and Direct Load Control (DLC) collaborate i…
Genotyping of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 strains isolated in Northern Sicily, Italy.
2008
During a three-year period, from April 2002 to May 2005, one hundred-forty-seven samples, taken from technical systems of water distribution at point of use, were repeatedly collected at six different sites in Northern Sicily and assayed for the presence of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 and serogroups 2 to 14. At the first samplings, the water distribution systems of all the sites were heavily contaminated, and disinfection treatments by the superheat and flush method were therefore performed. Treatments were always successful against L. pneumophila sg.1, but only in a few cases against all other serogroups. Eighty-six strains of L. pneumophila sg. 1, isolated from 26 of these samples,…
Energy Consumption/Generation Model: Data collected, architecture conceived and scenarios addressed
2014
The paper provides the data collected, the architecture and the conceived scenarios for the development of an Energy Consumptions/Generations Model. This model is suitable for the modeling, processing, analyzing and forecasting of energy consumption and generation at home, building and neighborhood level. Data are from the Census Returns, Electoral Registers & Council of the real town of Loughborough (U.K.). The architecture conceived describes the real distribution system which supplies the Loughborough geographic area. The scenarios considered take into account both traditional dwellings (equipped with dumb appliances) and new dwellings (equipped with smart networked appliances) © 2014 IE…
Decoupled solution of radial and weakly meshed distribution networks through a backward method
2008
A methodology for the analysis of radial or weakly meshed distribution systems supplying voltage dependent loads is developed. The solution process is iterative and, at each step, the loads are simulated by means of impedances. The network is divided into two sub-networks which must be solved separately and sequentially; in the first, named RP-net, only the lines resistances and the loads shunt equivalent resistances are considered; in the second, named XQ-net, only the lines reactances and the shunt equivalent reactances are taken into account. After a brief presentation of the b/f method, which is currently the most commonly used technique to solve distribution networks, the proposed meth…
An Integrated System for Efficient Management of Distribution Networks: The System's Architecture and the Telecommunication Infrastructure
2006
Modern distribution systems must keep up with high power quality standards due to the new regulations of the European Community and of the different national legislations. Efficient faults management is one of the basic tasks utilities must accomplish and this objective can be attained if and only if automation is present and efficient diagnostic procedures have been implemented in the centralized or distributed units all over the network. In this paper, the architecture of an integrated system for management of modern distribution systems is presented. The system includes routines for normal on-line optimal operation of distribution systems and for outage management, the latter including f…
Ant Colony Search algorithm for optimal strategical planning of electrical distribution systems expansion
2005
Strategical planning is one of many research fields in the design of electrical distribution systems. The problem of strategical planning is a multiobjective combinatorial problem and the search space may often be quite large concerning to the options. The aim is to identify a strategy of expansion of a given distribution system in a given timeframe. For this problem, the search space is created beforehand by running a multiobjective optimisation algorithm for the optimal design of distribution networks for different load levels related to different years. The sets of Pareto-optimal solutions obtained for each load level at each year are equivalent in terms of the considered objectives, the…
Control of Production-Distribution Systems under Discrete Disturbances and Control Actions
2011
This paper deals with the robust control and optimization of production-distribution systems. The model used in our problem formulation is a general network flow model that describes production, logistics, and transportation applications. The novelty in our formulation is in the discrete nature of the control and disturbance inputs. We highlight three main contributions: First, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of robustly control invariant hyperboxes. Second, we show that a stricter version of the same condition is sufficient for global convergence to an invariant set. Third, for the scalar case, we show that these results parallel existing results in the set…
A contribution to solve the problem of attributing harmonic distortion responsibility
2005
Owing to the proliferation of loads which draw nonsinusoidal currents, the current and voltage distortion in distribution systems is ever increasing. The correct identification of the source of distortion is important for attributing the responsibility of disturbances to utility and customers. In this paper, a new classification of the possible classes of responsibility is proposed, defining some conditions, based on the improvement of the method of decomposition of the current into conforming and nonconforming components, and of the method based on the evaluation of the sign of harmonic active powers, which allows their identification.

Sustainability of the Renewable Energy Extraction Close to the Mediterranean Islands
2017
The aim of this work is to explore the possibility of transitioning a fuel powered island to a renewable powered one. This transition is analyzed for the real MV/LV distribution system of the island of Pantelleria, in the Mediterranean Sea. Particularly, this work is focused on a renewable source nowadays totally unused: wave energy. Thanks to the innovative generator prototype designed by Department of Energy of University of Palermo (Italy), wave energy is able to represent a primary source for the production of electric energy in the Mediterranean islands. The procedures applied in the present article, as well as the main equations used, are the result of previous applications made in di…
