G. Herglotz’ Behandlung von Beschleunigungswellen in seiner Vorlesung «Mechanik der Kontinua» angewandt auf die Stosswellen von Christoffel

1981

Following a lecture delivered by Herglotz in 1925/26 we briefly treat acceleration waves in hyperelastic materials. Our main result is a divergence equation for the squared Euclidean norm of the so-called ‘wave vector’. We then apply Herglotz’ method (devised for acceleration waves) to the propagation of such first order discontinuities in elastic bodies as were treated by Christoffel in [1].

A probabilistic estimation and prediction technique for dynamic continuous social science models: The evolution of the attitude of the Basque Country…

2015

In this paper, a computational technique to deal with uncertainty in dynamic continuous models in Social Sciences is presented.Considering data from surveys, the method consists of determining the probability distribution of the survey output and this allows to sample data and fit the model to the sampled data using a goodness-of-fit criterion based the χ2-test. Taking the fitted parameters that were not rejected by the χ2-test, substituting them into the model and computing their outputs, 95% confidence intervals in each time instant capturing the uncertainty of the survey data (probabilistic estimation) is built. Using the same set of obtained model parameters, a prediction over …

Color image quality assessment measure using multivariate generalized Gaussian distribution

2014

This paper deals with color image quality assessment in the reduced-reference framework based on natural scenes statistics. In this context, we propose to model the statistics of the steer able pyramid coefficients by a Multivariate Generalized Gaussian distribution (MGGD). This model allows taking into account the high correlation between the components of the RGB color space. For each selected scale and orientation, we extract a parameter matrix from the three color components sub bands. In order to quantify the visual degradation, we use a closed-form of Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD) between two MGGDs. Using "TID 2008" benchmark, the proposed measure has been compared with the most i…

Characterizing the maximum parameter of the total-variation denoising through the pseudo-inverse of the divergence

2017

International audience; We focus on the maximum regularization parameter for anisotropic total-variation denoising. It corresponds to the minimum value of the regularization parameter above which the solution remains constant. While this value is well know for the Lasso, such a critical value has not been investigated in details for the total-variation. Though, it is of importance when tuning the regularization parameter as it allows fixing an upper-bound on the grid for which the optimal parameter is sought. We establish a closed form expression for the one-dimensional case, as well as an upper-bound for the two-dimensional case, that appears reasonably tight in practice. This problem is d…

How endogenous asymmetries in interregional market access trigger regional divergence

2005

International audience; We investigate how asymmetric trade patterns in differentiated products affect the regional distribution of economic activities. The asymmetry in interregional market access is an endogenous result of price competition and industry location and arises for intermediate values of trade costs. We show that the emergence of one-way trade in differentiated products gives rise to strong agglomeration forces and leads to the absorption of the smaller region's industry by the larger region. The number of spatial equilibria increases once the pattern of trade is endogenously accounted for.

Genetic-based evaluation of management units for sustainable vendace (Coregonus albula) fisheries in a large lake system

2022

Abstract The goal of the processing industry, trade and consumers is to get eco-labelled freshwater fish products from sustainable fisheries into the market as soon as possible. The fourth largest natural lake system in Europe, the Saimaa lake system supports a fishery for vendace (Coregonus albula). Certification of the fishery requires an understanding of population structure to help determine the number and spatial extent of management units. In this study, we analysed the genetic diversity of local vendace populations in the Saimaa lake system and aimed to identify the conservation and management units of vendace. Within the Saimaa, the genetic divergence between local populations of ve…

Reduced reference 3D mesh quality assessment based on statistical models

2015

International audience; During their geometry processing and transmission 3D meshes are subject to various visual processing operations like compression, watermarking, remeshing, noise addition and so forth. In this context it is indispensable to evaluate the quality of the distorted mesh, we talk here about the mesh visual quality (MVQ) assessment. Several works have tried to evaluate the MVQ using simple geometric measures, However this metrics do not correlate well with the subjective score since they fail to reflect the perceived quality. In this paper we propose a new objective metric to evaluate the visual quality between a mesh with a perfect quality called reference mesh and its dis…

Localized forms of the LBB condition and a posteriori estimates for incompressible media problems

2018

Abstract The inf–sup (or LBB) condition plays a crucial role in analysis of viscous flow problems and other problems related to incompressible media. In this paper, we deduce localized forms of this condition that contain a collection of local constants associated with subdomains instead of one global constant for the whole domain. Localized forms of the LBB inequality imply estimates of the distance to the set of divergence free fields. We use them and deduce fully computable bounds of the distance between approximate and exact solutions of boundary value problems arising in the theory of viscous incompressible fluids. The estimates are valid for approximations, which satisfy the incompres…

Removable singularities for div v=f in weighted Lebesgue spaces

2018

International audience; Let $w\in L^1_{loc}(\R^n)$ be apositive weight. Assuming that a doubling condition and an $L^1$ Poincar\'e inequality on balls for the measure $w(x)dx$, as well as a growth condition on $w$, we prove that the compact subsets of $\R^n$ which are removable for the distributional divergence in $L^{\infty}_{1/w}$ are exactly those with vanishing weighted Hausdorff measure. We also give such a characterization for $L^p_{1/w}$, $1<p<+\infty$, in terms of capacity. This generalizes results due to Phuc and Torres, Silhavy and the first author.
