Impact of oral health on nutritional status, self-perception of oral health and quality of life of institutionalized elderly
2021
Background This study aimed to investigate the influence of oral health on nutritional status, self-perception of oral health and health related quality of life of institutionalized elders. Material and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 193 institutionalized elders living in the metropolitan region of Joao Pessoa (Brazil). The independent variables included were: 1) caries experience (DMFT index and its components); 2) use and need of dental prostheses; and 3) type of edentulism. The dependent variables included were related to nutritional status, self-perception of oral health and health-related quality of life. Data were submitted to a descriptive and comparative analysis…
Oral health of cystic fibrosis patients at a north american center: A pilot study
2019
Background The objective of this study was to describe the oral health status of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) children in a US facility. Material and Methods Twenty CF children ages 6-18 were recruited from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Pulmonary Clinic. Parents completed a health questionnaire. Clinical examinations checked dental caries using the dmft/DMFT index, dental hygiene using the Simplified Greene-Vermillion Index (DI-S), gingival inflammation using the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs, and enamel defects using the modified Developmental Defects of Enamel Index. Results The majority (90%) brush twice a day, 65% consume sugary snacks, and 70% visit the dentist every 6 mont…
Can bayesian models play a role in dental caries epidemiology? Evidence from an application to the BELCAP data set
2012
Objectives The aim of this study was to show the potential of Bayesian analysis in statistical modelling of dental caries data. Because of the bounded nature of the dmft (DMFT) index, zero-inflated binomial (ZIB) and beta-binomial (ZIBB) models were considered. The effects of incorporating prior information available about the parameters of models were also shown. Methods The data set used in this study was the Belo Horizonte Caries Prevention (BELCAP) study (Bohning et al. (1999)), consisting of five variables collected among 797 Brazilian school children designed to evaluate four programmes for reducing caries. Only the eight primary molar teeth were considered in the data set. A data aug…
Caries en una población militar española
2011
Caries and quality of life in portuguese adolescents : impact of diet and behavioural risk factors
2018
Background The aim of this study was to assess the impact of diet and behavioural risk factors on caries appearance, and on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among Portuguese adolescents. Material and methods An epidemiological study conducted on 782 adolescents between 11-17 years, from randomly selected public schools of the 3rd cycle of basic education. All participants were asked for self-perceived general status health, about tooth-brushing habits and about the using of toothpaste with fluoride and a Food Frequency Questionnaire. The DMFT index (decayed, missing and filled teeth) was evaluated according to WHO criteria. To evaluate the OHRQoL, the 49-items Oral Health Impact…
Oral health-related quality of life after dental treatment in patients with intellectual disability
2020
Background The influence of dental treatment on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) has rarely been evaluated in patients with intellectual disability (ID) through validated questionnaires. The aim of this study was to estimate the changes on OHRQOL in patients with ID after the implementation of an institutional dental treatment program under general anesthesia using the Franciscan Hospital for Children Oral Health-Related Quality of Life questionnaire (FHCOHRQOL-Q). Material and Methods A prospective longitudinal study was conducted on 85 patients (mean age=24.85 years) classified according to DSM-V whose parents/caregivers completed the FHC-OHRQOL-Q. We analyzed the changes in t…
Challenges in dental statistics: data and modelling
2022
The aim of this work is to present the reflections and proposals derived from the first Workshop of the SISMEC STATDENT working group on statistical methods and applications in dentistry, held in Ancona (Italy) on 28th September 2011. STATDENT began as a forum of comparison and discussion for statisticians working in the field of dental research in order to suggest new and improve existing biostatistical and clinical epidemiological methods. During the meeting, we dealt with very important topics of statistical methodology for the analysis of dental data, covering the analysis of hierarchically structured and over-dispersed data, the issue of calibration and reproducibility, as well as some…
Oral-Health-Related Quality of Life and Cosleeping: The Role of Nocturnal Breastfeeding
2021
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the association between cosleeping and the number of breastfeeding sessions in infants, OHRQoL of the child and the family, and the DMFT Child’s index. The sample comprised 273 children (2–4 years old). In addition to the clinical examination of the child to assess the DMFT Index, the mother was requested to complete a questionnaire to collect data about the breastfeeding practice, diet, dental hygiene, dental check-ups, quality of the child’s oral life, and family impact (ECOHIS Scale). The children’s OHRQoL is positively correlated with number of night-time breastfeeding sessions at 12 months (r2 = 0.40 **), DMFT index (r2 = 0.60 **), impact family …
A comparison of the dental status and treatment needs of older adults with and without chronic mental illness in Sevilla, Spain
2012
Objectives: To study the dental status and treatment needs of institutionalized older adults with chronic mental illness compared to a non-psychiatric control sample. Study Design: The sample size was 100, in which 50 were psychogeriatric patients (study group; SG) classified according to DSM-IV, with a mean age of 69.6 ± 6.7 years, and 50 non-psychiatric patients (control group; CG), with a mean age of 68.3 ± 6.9 years. Clinical oral health examinations were conducted and caries were recorded clinically using the Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth Index (DMFT). Results were analyzed statistically using the Student’s t-test or analysis of variance. Results: Caries prevalence was 58% and 62% …
Kariesa izplatība, kas novērtēta ar ICDAS II (starptautiskā kariesa noteikšanas un novērtēšanas sistēma), pirmsskolas vecuma bērniem Latvijā
2019
Ievads Zobu kariess ir plaši izplatīta multifaktoriāla slimība, kas ietekmē visu populāciju, tomēr pieejami maz datu par zobu kariesa prevalenci Latvijas populācijā. Šis šķērsgriezuma pētījums tika veikts 2018.gadā Rīgas apkaimē, lai novērtētu kariesa prevalenci pirmsskolas vecuma bērniem. Šī pilotpētījuma galvenie mērķi bija, pirmkārt, izpētīt kariesa prevalenci starp 2-6 gadus veciem bērniem Latvijas bērnudārzā, pielietojot ICDAS II; otrkārt, salīdzināt ICDAS II kritērijus ar DMF indeksu, lai izvērtētu kariesa prevalenci. Metodes Kopumā tika izmeklēti 176 Latvijas bērnudārza bērni vecumā no 2 līdz 6 gadiem. Zobu kariesu izvērtēja, lietojot ICDAS II kritērijus. Bērni tika iedalīti 2 gadu, …
