Considerations to the policy of future clinical therapeutic trials in DMD.

2002

In spite of rapidly increasing insight into the molecular basis of neuromuscular diseases, treatment still relies on convention and clinical studies. Experience with a multicentre double blind treatment study in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and with consecutive steroid treatment documentation for up to 8 years enables us to identify a series of crucial points on which to focus while planning such clinical trials. The most important seem to be: a carefully structured, detailed study, clear-cut aims and objectives, expertise of investigators, sufficient training of examiners, and careful monitoring. If patients with neuromuscular diseases are treated outside structured studies, their course sh…

Epidemiological and virological studies into the poliomyelitis in Valencia (1959-1969)

2009

Studies into the polio virus began in Valencia in 1959 with the work undertaken by the microbiologist Vicente Sanchis-Bayarri Vaillant. After his education at the Rochester University and at the Pasteur Institute, Sanchis-Bayarri Vaillant established a laboratory of cell cultures at the Faculty of Medicine in Valencia, where he developed a new diagnostic technique for the poliomyelitis virus. In addition, epidemiological studies were carried out both prior to and post the 1963 vaccination campaign, which proved that Sabin’s oral vaccine was both effective and safe for use.

U-search: a meta engine for creation of knowledge paths on the web

2010

The main tools used to find digital contents in the Web are search engines and directories but they are not presently able to understand the user specific needs and starting knowledge. This work presents "U-Search" a new meta engine that allows to create knowledge paths on the Web based on specific user requirements and knowledge levels. To this end, we consider different searcher categories such as a "basic searcher" who knows little about a topic and will look for more information, a "deep searcher" who will look for specific details on a topic that he/she already knows and a "wide searcher" who will look for expanding his/her knowledge domain with topics that are loosely related to the s…

PS-039 DokuPIK – Pharmaceutical interventions: Do ward pharmacists know how to document?

2014

Background The internet-based categorical, hierarchical documentation system for routine pharmaceutical interventions (PIs) DokuPIK is widely used especially among German ward-based pharmacists. Purpose To conduct a survey-based study on its clinical usability. Materials and methods Out of 498 registered DokuPIK users, 37 volunteered to independently evaluate 24 standardised case reports 1 between 01–03 2012. Case evaluation was restricted to the reason for PI and was performed based on 26 given survey items with no limit on the number of items chosen. Ratings were conducted electronically and anonymously. In order to define meaningful reference item selections, majority decisions made by 5…

Guidelines Regarding §16 of the German Transplantation Act - Initial Experiences with Structured Reporting.

2017

Nursing documentation of pressure ulcers in nursing homes: comparison of record content and patient examinations

2016

Aim The aim of this study was to describe the accuracy and quality of nursing documentation of the prevalence, risk factors and prevention of pressure ulcers, and compare retrospective audits of nursing documentation with patient examinations conducted in nursing homes. Design This study used a cross-sectional descriptive design. Method A retrospective audit of 155 patients' records and patient examinations using the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel form and the Braden scale, conducted in January and February 2013. Results The prevalence of pressure ulcers was 38 (26%) in the audit of the patient records and 33 (22%) in patient examinations. A total of 17 (45%) of the documented press…

Executive summary of the joint position paper on renal denervation of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and the Eu…

2016

Renal denervation (RDN) was reported as a novel exciting treatment for resistant hypertension in 2009. An initial randomized trial supported its efficacy and the technique gained rapid acceptance across the globe. However, a subsequent large blinded, sham arm randomized trial conducted in the USA (to gain Food and Drug Administration approval) failed to achieve its primary efficacy end point in reducing office blood pressure at 6 months. Published in 2014 this trial received both widespread praise and criticism. RDN has effectively stopped out with clinical trials pending further evidence. This joint consensus document representing the European Society of Hypertension and the Cardiovascular…

Editorial: CBCT special issue

2014

In the dental community, it is a common belief that CBCT was invented for oral and maxillofacial imaging. Of course, we know that this is a myth since the technique of a volumetric CT is indeed much older and dates back to the late 1970s.1,2 Considering that CT was introduced in 1973, its volumetric counterpart was developed very soon thereafter driven by the need for high spatial and temporal resolution that a conventional CT at that time was not able to achieve. However, successful marketing of the technique indeed was much later, and certainly a consequence of the publication of “A new volumetric CT machine for dental imaging based on the cone-beam technique: preliminary results” by Mozz…

Radiologists' leading position in image-guided therapy

2013

Image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are related to, or performed under, some kind of imaging. Such imaging may be direct inspection (as in open surgery) or indirect inspection as in endoscopy or laparoscopy. Common to all these techniques is the transformation of optical and visible information to a monitor or the eye of the operator. Image-guided therapy (IGT) differs by using processed imaging data acquired before, during and after a wide range of different imaging techniques. This means that the planning, performing and monitoring, as well as the control of the therapeutic procedure, are based and dependent on the "virtual reality" provided by imaging investigations. Since…
