A rietveld study of the cation substitution between uvarovite and yttrium-aluminum synthetic garnets, obtained by sol-gel method

1994

A series of synthetic garnets solid solutions with compositions between Y 3 Al 2 Al 3 O 12 (Y-Al garnet) (YAG) and Ca 3 Cr 2 Si 3 O 12 (uvarovite) was synthesized using the sol-gel method. The expected general formula is (Ca x Y 1-x ) 3 (Cr x Al 1-x ) 2 (Si x Al 1-x ) 3 O 12 where x=0 to x=1. The cation distribution in dodecahedral, octahedral and tetrahedral sites and bond distances in these synthetic garnets were determined using the Rietveld method. It shows the incomplete substitution in small sites. The smaller site the smaller substitution there is

Pressure-induced amorphization of the Y3Ga5O12 garnet studied to 1 Mbar

2020

We use micro-beam synchrotron x-ray diffraction to study the pressure-induced amorphization of nano-sized and single crystals of Y3Ga5O12 up to pressures exceeding 1 Mbar in static compression. The abrupt pressure-induced amorphization found for both 56 nm and bulk micrometric crystals at around 76 GPa independently of the pressure transmitting medium employed demonstrates its intrinsic nature, previously predicted at 79 GPa by ab initio calculations. The single crystal structural solution at 50 GPa shows that the contraction of the unit-cell, mostly accommodated by the compressible YO8 dodecahedra, gives rise to a regularization and tilting increase of the GaO6 polyhedra with the Y?O-Ga an…

Rational Design of Single-Ion Magnets and Spin Qubits Based on Mononuclear Lanthanoid Complexes

2012

Here we develop a general approach to calculating the energy spectrum and the wave functions of the low-lying magnetic levels of a lanthanoid ion submitted to the crystal field created by the surrounding ligands. This model allows us to propose general criteria for the rational design of new mononuclear lanthanoid complexes behaving as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) or acting as robust spin qubits. Three typical environments exhibited by these metal complexes are considered, namely, (a) square antiprism, (b) triangular dodecahedron, and (c) trigonal prism. The developed model is used to explain the properties of some representative examples showing these geometries. Key questions in this ar…

Cyanido-Bridged {LnIIIWV} Heterobinuclear Complexes: Synthesis and Magneto-Structural Study

2017

A new series of cyanido-bridged {LnIIIWV} heterobinuclear complexes of formula [LnIII(pyim)2(i-PrOH)(H2O)2(μ-CN)WV(CN)7]·2H2O [Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3), Ho (4), and Er (5); pyim = 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)-pyridine) and i-PrOH = isopropyl alcohol] were synthesized by one-pot reaction between (NH3Bu)3[W(CN)8] and [Ln(pyim)2]2+ complexes (generated in situ by mixing the corresponding LnIII ions and the pyim ligand). Compounds 1–5 are isomorphous and crystallize in the monoclinic system P21/n space group. Their crystal structure consists of binuclear units in which the octacyanotungstate(V) anion coordinates to the corresponding LnIII ion through a single cyanide ligand. The tungsten(V) and lant…

Effect of the lanthanoid-size on the structure of a series of lanthanoid-anilato 2-D lattices

2018

AbstractWe report the synthesis and characterization of a series of Ln-based bromoanilato 2-D lattices with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO): [Ln2(C6O4Br2)3(DMSO)n]·2DMSO·mH2O with n = 6 and m = 0 for Ln = La (1), Ce (2), Pr (3), Nd (4), Sm (5), Eu (6) and Gd (7); n = 4 and m = 2 for Ln = Tb (8), Dy (9), Ho (10), Er (11), Tm (12) and Yb (13) (C6O4Br22− = 3,6-dibromo-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone = bromoanilato). The X-ray analysis shows that the largest Ln(III) ions (La-Gd, 1-7) crystallize in the monoclinic P21/n space group (phase I), whereas the smaller Ln(III) ions (Tb–Yb, 8–13) crystallize in the triclinic P-1 space group (phase II). Both phases present a (6,3)-2-D topology but show importan…

Acetylcholine-binding protein in the hemolymph of the planorbid snail Biomphalaria glabrata is a pentagonal dodecahedron (60 subunits).

2012

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) play important neurophysiological roles and are of considerable medical relevance. They have been studied extensively, greatly facilitated by the gastropod acetylcholine-binding proteins (AChBP) which represent soluble structural and functional homologues of the ligand-binding domain of nAChR. All these proteins are ring-like pentamers. Here we report that AChBP exists in the hemolymph of the planorbid snail Biomphalaria glabrata (vector of the schistosomiasis parasite) as a regular pentagonal dodecahedron, 22 nm in diameter (12 pentamers, 60 active sites). We sequenced and recombinantly expressed two ∼25 kDa polypeptides (BgAChBP1 and BgAChBP2) wit…

Aluminum-lithium clusters: First-principles simulation of geometries and electronic properties

2002

The geometries and electronic properties of small lithium-rich ${\mathrm{Al}}_{N}{\mathrm{Li}}_{5N}$ $(N=1--6,10)$ clusters are studied using first-principles simulations. Aluminum ions form a compact inner core configuration in the clusters that changes into a chainlike skeleton embedded in a lithium surrounding as the cluster size increases. This behavior restricts $s\ensuremath{-}p$ hybridization effects and causes separate s and p bands in the electronic energy spectrum. A significant charge transfer from Li ions and nearby Al ions strengthens ionic Al-Li bonds, while Al-Al bonds gain a more covalent nature. The evolution of some bulk properties of $B2$ and $B32$ phases of AlLi alloys i…

Formation, TEM study and 3D reconstruction of the human erythrocyte peroxiredoxin-2 dodecahedral higher-order assembly.

2004

The production of a higher-order assembly of peroxiredoxin-2 (Prx-2) from human erythrocytes has been achieved during specimen preparation on holey carbon support films, in the presence of ammonium molybdate and polyethylene glycol. TEM study suggested that this assembly is a regular dodecahedron, containing 12 Prx-2 decamers (Mr 2.62 MDa, external diameter approximately 20 nm). This interpretation has been supported by production of a approximately 1.6 nm 3D reconstruction from the negative stain TEM data, with automated docking of the available X-ray data of the Prx-2 decamer. Comparison with other known protein dodecahedral and viral icosahedral structures indicates that this arrangement…

Monoclinic-tetragonal-monoclinic phase transitions in Eu0.1Bi0.9VO4 under pressure

2019

The promising technological material Eu0.1Bi0.9VO4, has been studied for the first time at room-temperature under high-pressure, up to 24.9 GPa, by means of in situ angle dispersive powder x-ray diffraction (XRD). The compound undergoes two phase transitions at 1.9 and 16.1 GPa. The first transition is from the monoclinic fergusonite-type structure (space group I2/a) to a tetragonal scheelite-type structure (space group I41/a), being a ferroelastic-paraelastic transformation similar to that previously reported for isomorphic pristine BiVO4. The second phase transition is first-order in nature. The scheelite-type and the second high-pressure phase coexist in a wide pressure range. A monoclin…

Analysis of the plasmonic excitations in assemblies of three-dimensional electron clusters

2020

In the quest to built novel metamaterials with unique optical properties, three-dimensional assemblies of metal clusters and nanoparticles are gathering significant attention. Organized geometries, such as tetrahedra and icosahedra, can be built, for example, by using DNA strands or virus capsids as templates. Here we use the jellium model and time-dependent density functional theory to study the plasmonic resonances in different arrangements of eight-electron clusters from the electronic perspective. A charge transfer ratio index based on the induced transition densities is used to quantify the charge transfer nature of the excitations at different energies. We vary the size, shape, and in…
