A gene transfer agent and a dynamic repertoire of secretion systems hold the keys to the explosive radiation of the emerging pathogen Bartonella

2013

Gene transfer agents (GTAs) randomly transfer short fragments of a bacterial genome. A novel putative GTA was recently discovered in the mouse-infecting bacterium Bartonella grahamii. Although GTAs are widespread in phylogenetically diverse bacteria, their role in evolution is largely unknown. Here, we present a comparative analysis of 16 Bartonella genomes ranging from 1.4 to 2.6 Mb in size, including six novel genomes from Bartonella isolated from a cow, two moose, two dogs, and a kangaroo. A phylogenetic tree inferred from 428 orthologous core genes indicates that the deadly human pathogen B. bacilliformis is related to the ruminant-adapted clade, rather than being the earliest diverging…

Pseidogadījumu virkņu izveide ar lineāro nobīdes reģistru un to dešifrēšana

2021

Darbā tiek apskatītas lineāro nobīdes reģistru veidotās virknes un to nejaušība. Praktiskajā daļā tiek apskatīts pseidogadījumu virkņu veidošana dažādos garumos, to uzlaušanas un raksturīgo polinomu atrašanas laikietilpīgums.

Controlled iontophoretic release of glucocorticoids through epithelial cell monolayers

1998

In the present study the iontophoretic transdermal delivery of three different glucocorticoids through a confluent monolayer of MDCK cells, mimicking biological barriers, was studied. For this experiment an in vitro model with platinum electrodes for iontophoresis and MDCK cells was developed. With this model investigations concerning the biocompatibility of the cells depending on different current densities and the iontophoretic permeation of the three glucocorticoids through the cell monolayer were carried out. The permeation behavior of this living biological barrier should be very similar to the non-living barrier, human stratum corneum. Different current densities (12.74-38.22 microA/c…

Consequence of litter removal on pedogenesis: A case study in Bachs and Irchel (Switzerland)

2016

In forests, soils contain at least twice as much carbon than plants that mostly grow in the upper layers. Litter at the interface between soils and the atmosphere regulates a variety of biogeochemical cycles, which are important for both plants and soils and have possible implications for other environmental components. We have compared leachates collected during an incubation experiment on: a) beech and oak leaves; b) organic subhorizons OLn, OLv, OF, and mineral A horizon; c) treated with litter removal (and untreated) plots, to assess the changes in the chemical composition of the litter layers and leachates during weathering and their influence on the underlying horizons. . Individual repeatability in timing and spatial flexibility of migration routes of trans-Saharan migratory raptors

2015

Satellite-tracking technology has allowed scientists to make a quantum leap in the field of migration ecology. Nowadays, the basic description of migratory routes of many species of birds has been reported. However, the investigation of bird migration at individual level (i.e. repeatability in migratory routes and timing) still remains seldom explored. Here, we investigated repeated migratory trips of a trans-Saharan endangered migratory raptor, the Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus, tracked by GPS satellite telemetry. We compared between- and within-individual variation in migratory routes and timing in order to assess the degree of repeatability (or conversely, the flexibility) in mi…

Insulin resistance and endogenous digoxin-like factor in obese hypertensive patients with glucose intolerance

1992

Hypertensive obese subjects with glucose intolerance have hyperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance and intracellular cation imbalance resulting in increased sodium content. The aim of our study was to assess in these patients plasma levels of endogenous digoxin-like factor (EDLF), an inhibitor of the sodium-pump mechanism. We studied 14 hypertensive and 12 normotensive subjects with obesity and glucose intolerance for fasting blood glucose, and plasma insulin, C-peptide and EDLF levels: the two groups were matched for age and BMI and were studied after a 2-week wash-out period from hypotensive drugs. Compared with normotensives, hypertensive subjects had higher plasma insulin levels, a greater…
