Clinical studies have demonstrated beneficial effects for clopidogrel in patients with atherothrombotic disease. Recent in vitro studies identified stimulating effects of clopidogrel on endothelial cells, pointing towards mechanisms of action beyond the inhibition of platelet aggregation. We hypothesized that in vivo use of clopidogrel improves endothelial dysfunction in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Prevalence of older in-patients at risk of clopidogrel resistance according to the STIB score. Results from REPOSI registry

The phenomenon of resistance to copidogrel catches the attention of a growing number of clinicians because of its frequency and the severity of adverse events related to it. The identification of patients with high platelet reactivity (HPR may help to improve their therapy applying the concept of personalized medicine, most important in the older people treated with polypharmacy. The existece of such a simple clinical method as the STIB score, that allows to predict the possible resistace to clopidogrel at the bedside without using expensive laboratory investigations, provides an attractive approach to the problem.

Heme oxygenase-1 induction and regulation in unstimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is a stress protein induced by a variety of stimuli in inflammatory cells. This study was set up to investigate the induction of this protein in unstimulated macrophages. Resident mouse peritoneal macrophages purified by adhesion and cultured in basal conditions strongly induced HO-1 in a time-dependent manner, with a peak at 20 hr. At the same time, low levels of nitrite accumulated in the culture medium and expression of nitric oxide synthase-2 (NOS-2) and NOS-3 protein was detected. Comparison between rectal and body surface temperature in dogs by the calibrated infrared thermometer

Highlights • Dogs poorly tolerate rectal temperature measurements with a contact thermometer. • Existing alternative approaches used uncalibrated infrared thermometers. • Gum and inguinal temperature are correlated moderately to rectal temperature. • Hyperthermia was detected with sensitivity and specificity up to 90.0% and 78.6%. • Future studies should include a calibrated thermometer and control external factors.

Pre‐clinical evaluation of the effect of a volume‐stable collagen matrix on periodontal regeneration in two‐wall intrabony defects

Aim To histologically evaluate the effect of a new collagen matrix on periodontal regeneration. Materials and methods Two-wall intrabony defects were surgically created bilaterally distally to the maxillary first and third pre-molars in beagle dogs. The defects were randomly allocated to open flap debridement either with (test) or without (control) a volume-stable collagen matrix (VCMX). After 12 weeks, the dogs were euthanized, and the specimens histologically processed. Do More Highly Organized Collagen Fibrils Increase Bone Mechanical Strength in Loss of Mineral Density After One-Year Running Training?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of long-term running training on the structural properties of bone. Ten beagle dogs ran according to a strenuous progressive program (up to 40 km/day) for 1 year. At the end of the training program, there was a significant reduction in bone mineral density (up to 9.7%) in the vertebrae of the runner dogs as compared with 10 sedentary control dogs. Polarized light microscopy of the vertebral trabecular bone, however, displayed proportionally higher retardation values of the collagen network of the runner dogs than of the sedentary dogs, suggesting a reorganization in a more parallel manner in the collagen fibrils. (2) Methods: In eight beagle dogs, acute two-wall intrabony defects were treated with open flap debridement either with VCMX (test) or without (control).
