Molecular Systematics of the Long-Snouted Deep Water Dogfish (Centrophoridae, Deania) With Implications for Identification, Taxonomy, and Conservation
2021
According to the most recent taxonomical revision, the deep-sea dogfish genus Deania encompasses four species. Three of them, D. calcea, D. profundorum, and D. hystricosa, occur in the North Atlantic. Whilst D. profundorum can be identified by the presence of a subcaudal keel, the other two species are not easily visually distinguished. Uncertainties over identification raises concerns over stock units and whether management plans are adequate. In this study we compared onboard visual identification of Deania specimens, with morphological inspection of skin denticles under stereo microscope and with independent molecular taxonomical assignment using two molecular markers. Particular emphasi…
Habituation of the orienting response as reflected by the skin conductance response and by endogenous event-related brain potentials
2004
The paper is concerned with the question of whether endogenous components of the auditory event-related brain potential (ERP) qualify for showing habituation of the orienting response (OR). Although response decrements have been found in nearly every ERP component, this question is still of current concern because a true selective response inhibition proving habituation of the OR is still lacking. The question has been tackled using single-trial ERP measurements in classical variants of the repetition/change paradigm commonly used in the traditional OR research on autonomous responses such as the skin conductance response (SCR). Results on 120 adults indicate that at least two endogenous co…
A large-scale screening for the taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus, and the meadow tick, Dermacentor reticulatus, in southern Scandinavia, 2016
2019
Abstract The taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus, has previously been limited to eastern Europe and northern Asia, but recently its range has expanded to Finland and northern Sweden. The species is of medical importance, as it, along with a string of other pathogens, may carry the Siberian and Far Eastern subtypes of tick-borne encephalitis virus. These subtypes appear to cause more severe disease, with higher fatality rates than the central European subtype. Until recently, the meadow tick, Dermacentor reticulatus, has been absent from Scandinavia, but has now been detected in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Dermacentor reticulatus carries, along with other pathogens, Babesia canis and Rickettsia r…
Temporal quantitative phosphoproteomics of ADP stimulation reveals novel central nodes in platelet activation and inhibition
2017
Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) enhances platelet activation by virtually any other stimulant to complete aggregation. It binds specifically to the G-protein-coupled membrane receptors P2Y1 and P2Y12, stimulating intracellular signaling cascades, leading to integrin aIIbb3 activation, a process antagonized by endothelial prostacyclin. P2Y12 inhibitors are among the most successful antiplatelet drugs, however, show remarkable variability in efficacy. We reasoned whether a more detailed molecular understanding of ADP-induced protein phosphorylation could identify (1) critical hubs in platelet signaling toward aggregation and (2) novel molecular targets for antiplatelet treatment strategies. We ap…
Multiple reassortment and interspecies transmission events contribute to the diversity of feline, canine and feline/canine-like human group A rotavir…
2011
Abstract RNA–RNA hybridization assays and complete genome sequence analyses have shown that feline rotavirus (FRV) and canine rotavirus (CRV) strains display at least two distinct genotype constellations (genogroups), represented by the FRV strain RVA/Cat-tc/AUS/Cat97/1984/G3P[3] and the human rotavirus (HRV) strain RVA/Human-tc/JPN/AU-1/1982/G3P3[9], respectively. G3P[3] and G3P[9] strains have been detected sporadically in humans. The complete genomes of two CRV strains (RVA/Dog-tc/ITA/RV198-95/1995/G3P[3] and RVA/Dog-tc/ITA/RV52-96/1996/G3P[3]) and an unusual HRV strain (RVA/Human-tc/ITA/PA260-97/1997/G3P[3]) were determined to further elucidate the complex relationships among FRV, CRV a…
Hemoprotozoa of domestic animals in France: Prevalence and molecular characterization
2008
Very limited information is available on epizootiology of haematozoan infections in French domestic animals. In an attempt to address this issue, prevalence of piroplasmida was studied in carnivores and ruminants, whereas prevalence of Hepatozoon spp. was only investigated in carnivores. In total, 383 animals were included in the survey (namely 116 cats, 108 dogs, 91 sheep and 68 cows). Parasite diagnosis was carried out using molecular methods such as PCR and sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene. In addition, ruminant samples were analyzed with the reverse line blotting technique (RLB). Results of RLB and PCR plus sequencing were in total agreement. In carnivores, haematozoan prevalence was clo…
Palazzo Alliata di Pietratagliata, già Termine
2013
The Effects of IFRS Adoption on the Unconditional Conservatism of Spanish Listed Companies
2017
This paper analyses the effects on unconditional conservatism of the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by Spanish listed companies in January 2005. The lack of robustness in the previous evidence justifies analysing this issue from different perspectives. To this end, we use, for the first time in this context, Ahmed and Duellman’s methodology (J. Account. Econ., 2007). In its design, these authors consider the impact of growth options and other future incomes, controlling for the idiosyncratic factors that the literature has found to condition this type of conservatism. Additionally, beyond the pooled regression techniques usually used, we use econome…
Omphalotins E-I, Five Oxidatively Modified Nematicidal Cyclopeptides fromOmphalotus olearius
2009
Omphalotins E–I, oxidatively modified cyclic dodecapeptides, were isolated from mycelial extracts of the basidiomycete Omphalotus olearius, and their structures were determined by NMR spectroscopic and MS methods. Four of the five omphalotins contained an unprecedented N-hydroxylated tricyclic tryptophan derivative. All compounds exhibited strong and selective nematicidal activity against the plant pathogen Meloidogyne incognita with LD90 values between 2 and 5 μg mL–1. Cytotoxic activities were not detected up to 50 μg mL–1. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2009)
Populism on the loose
2018
Tämän kirjan otsikko, ”Populism on the loose”, viittaa yhtä aikaa kahteen e…
