While dog owners ascribe different emotions to their pets, including jealousy, research on secondary emotions in nonhuman animals is very limited and, so far, only one study has investigated jealousy in dogs (Canis familiaris). This work explores jealousy in dogs one step further. We conducted two studies adapting a procedure devised to assess jealousy in human infants. Abstract An optimized computer-controlled freezing protocol for the cryopreservation of rat liver parenchymal cells was developed. The best survival rates were obtained when a slow cooling rate was used and when the supercooling was interrupted with a shock cooling to initiate ice nucleation. Ten percent dimethyl sulfoxide was added and removed gradually for best results. The pharmacokinetics of ciprofloxacin (CIP) following intravenous administration in dogs have been investigated. The drug was administered at three doses (2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg body weight) and was assayed in biological fluid samples (plasma and urine) by an HPLC method. The plasma concentration-time curves were best described by a two-compartment open pharmacokinetic model. The drug was widely distributed (Vd(area) almost 3 l/kg), being distributed in the dog more rapidly than in other species (t1/2(lambda 1) 3 min approximately). Dogs process faces and emotional expressions much like humans, but the time windows important for face processing in dogs are largely unknown. By combining our non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) protocol on dogs with machine-learning algorithms, we show category-specific dog brain responses to pictures of human and dog facial expressions, objects, and phase-scrambled faces. We trained a support vector machine classifier with spatiotemporal EEG data to discriminate between responses to pairs of images.
