Modelling Quoting in Newswriting : A Framework for Studies on the Production of News

The Mediated Social Communication (MSC) approach considers mass media a venue for opposing and complementary societal groups to publicly negotiate socially relevant topics. This negotiation is conducted through representatives of these groups and mediated by journalists. Inspired by the MSC approach, this paper presents an empirically grounded model that structures the mediating process through the process of quoting. By identifying the key phases of newswriting as sub-processes of quoting, the paper argues that journalists (1) decide on a topical issue to be addressed (topicalisation), (2) identify groups of people who are linked to this issue (societal localisation), (3) pick some people …

Antecedentes: el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar las propiedades psicométricas de la escala de quejas somáticas (SCL) en una población infantil y adulta española. Este instrumento evalúa la frecuencia con que las personas experimentan y sienten dolor, como dolor de estómago y dolores de cabeza, entre otros. La osteogénesis imperfecta (OI), popularmente conocida como la “enfermedad de los huesos de cristal”, es una patología congénita del tejido conectivo, de carácter hereditario, que afecta principalmente a la producción de colágeno. Presenta una etiología y clínica muy heterogénea, con amplia variedad fenotípica, aunque su principal característica es la elevada fragilidad ósea, que se traduce en fracturas frecuentes. Understanding Batesian mimicry is a classic problem in evolutionary biology. In Batesian mimicry, a defended species (the model) is mimicked by an undefended species (the mimic). Prior theories have emphasized the role of predator behavior and learning as well as evolution in model-mimic complexes but have not examined the role of population dynamics in potentially governing the relative abundances and even persistence of model-mimic systems. Here, we examined the effect of the population dynamics of predators and alternative prey on the prevalence of warning-signaling prey composed of models and mimics.
