Central serotonin depletion modulates the behavioural, endocrine and physiological responses to repeated social stress and subsequent c-fos expressio…
1999
Abstract Intraspecific confrontation has been used to study effect of depleting central serotonin on the adaptation of male rats to repeated social stress (social defeat). Four groups of adult male rats were used (serotonin depletion/sham: stressed; serotonin depletion/sham: non-stressed). Central serotonin was reduced (by 59–97%) by a single infusion of the neurotoxin 5,7-dihydroxtryptamine (150 μg) into the cerebral ventricles; levels of dopamine and noradrenaline were unaltered (rats received appropriate uptake blockers prior to neurotoxic infusions). Sham-operated animals received solute only. Rats were then either exposed daily for 10 days to a second larger aggressive male in the latt…
Artificial pupil versus contralateral balanced contact lens fit for presbyopia correction.
2014
Purpose: To assess and compare the effects of contact lens-based artificial pupil design and contralateral balanced multifocal contact lens combination (CBMCLC) on visual performance. Methods: This randomized crossover study conducted at the University of Valencia, Spain included 38 presbyopic patients using an artificial pupil contact lens in the nondominant eye and a CBMCLC. After a month of lens wear, the binocular distance visual acuity (BDVA), binocular near visual acuity (BNVA), defocus curve, binocular distance, and near contrast sensitivity and near stereoacuity (NSA) were measured under photopic conditions (85 cd/m2). Moreover, BDVA and binocular distance contrast sensitivity were …
Mother knows best: dominant females determine offspring dispersal in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes).
2011
Background: Relatedness between group members is central to understanding the causes of animal dispersal. In many group-living mammals this can be complicated as extra-pair copulations result in offspring having varying levels of relatedness to the dominant animals, leading to a potential conflict between male and female dominants over offspring dispersal strategies. To avoid resource competition and inbreeding, dominant males might be expected to evict unrelated males and related females, whereas the reverse strategy would be expected for dominant females. Methodology/Principal Findings: We used microsatellites and long-term data from an urban fox (Vulpes vulpes) population to compare disp…
Cerebral lateralisation during signed and spoken language production in children born deaf
2019
Highlights • Children born deaf show typical left-hemisphere dominance during language production. • No evidence of an association between left-lateralisation and language proficiency. • Exposure to auditory speech via a cochlear implant is not a prerequisite for left hemisphere language dominance.
Corpus Callosum Morphology in Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder: Morphometric Analysis of MRI
1991
Although behavioral evidence provides support for the notion that attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is related to central nervous system dysfunction, there is little direct evidence to reveal which neurometabolic systems or brain structures are involved. Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggest that, compared to nondisabled controls, ADHD children may have a smaller right frontal region. Morphometric analysis of MRI scans was used in this exploratory study to determine whether correlated regional variation might exist in the corpus callosum of children with ADHD. While all MRI scans were judged to be clinically normal, morphometric analysis revealed that, compa…
The combination of diffractive and refractive multifocal intraocular lenses to provide full visual function after cataract surgery.
2009
PURPOSE To investigate if implantation of a far dominant refractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) in one eye and a near dominant diffractive multifocal IOL in the fellow eye improves range of vision following cataract surgery. METHODS This was a prospective, nonrandomized, case-control study involving 20 patients (40 eyes) scheduled for cataract surgery. Inclusion criteria were bilateral cataracts, minimum age 50 years, availability for follow-up visits, and informed consent. All patients received a far dominant refractive multifocal IOL (ReZoom, Abbott Medical Optics) in their dominant eye and a near dominant diffractive multifocal IOL (Tecnis ZM900, AMO) in their nondominant eye. Preo…
The Global Status of the Crowdfunding Industry
2020
AbstractThe chapter presents key international trends relating to crowdfunding market development, and also provides insights into the current research available attempting to explain such developments. Facts and figures from leading national and regional markets are presented in a comparative manner, with specific focus on the diversity of crowdfunding models, growth trajectories, and geographical variations. The chapter shows that crowdfunding is no longer a fringe activity but gradually moving mainstream with substantial volumes recorded nationally, regionally, and globally. Furthermore, we illustrate the dominance of crowd-lending models across regions, as well as their sub-model variat…
The Export-Productivity Link in Brazilian Manufacturing Firms
2015
This paper explores the link between exports and total factor productivity in Brazilian manufacturing firms over the period 2000–08. The Brazilian experience is instructive, as it is a case of an economy that expanded aggregate exports significantly, but with stagnant aggregate growth in total factor productivity. The paper first estimates firm-level total factor productivity under alternative assumptions (exogenous and endogenous law of motion for productivity) following a GMM procedure. In turn, the analysis uses stochastic dominance techniques to assess whether the ex ante most productive firms are those that start exporting (self-selection hypothesis). Finally, the paper tests whether e…
A Simple Indicator Based Evolutionary Algorithm for Set-Based Minmax Robustness
2018
For multiobjective optimization problems with uncertain parameters in the objective functions, different variants of minmax robustness concepts have been defined in the literature. The idea of minmax robustness is to optimize in the worst case such that the solutions have the best objective function values even when the worst case happens. However, the computation of the minmax robust Pareto optimal solutions remains challenging. This paper proposes a simple indicator based evolutionary algorithm for robustness (SIBEA-R) to address this challenge by computing a set of non-dominated set-based minmax robust solutions. In SIBEA-R, we consider the set of objective function values in the worst c…
Contributo alla conoscenza della flora sommersa del porto di Pantelleria (Canale di Sicilia)
1978
Abstract Some data on the benthic flora of Pantelleria Harbour (Channel of Sicily, Mediterranean).—The benthic flora of the harbour of Pantelleria includes: 10 Myxophyceae, 56 Rhodophyceae, 44 Diatomeae, 19 Phaeophyceae, 18 Chlorophyceae and 2 Angiospermae. The Rh/Ph value (2.9) is in agreement with the values found from the open-sea. A chorological examination shows a dominance of Atlantic-Mediterranean species (54.36%).
